CORBELS This listing does NOT include corbels. Corbels can be purchased separately. Some listings include corbels with the mantel. COLOR The mantel stain is offered in 5 color choices. Each color option is included in the listing photos. Colors may vary slightly depending on the beam itself, since no two beams have exactly the same qualities. We use a tinted satin finish polyurethane which is the least sheen that is available in a poly. If you would like to see the colors in person and on a pine sample, we have sample sets available for purchase. Unfinished beams are available in our shop as well. MOUNTING Read below for different options for mounting your mantel. See listing photos for examples. Straps: If you are mounting a mantel where the stone hasn't been laid yet, steel straps are recommended. The straps will not be visible once the stonework is complete. Straps can be selected when adding the mantel to your cart. These straps are pre-drilled with holes every 2 inches and should be screwed to the back of the beam, with one hole extending below the beam and 2 to 3 holes extending above the beam. We suggest that you use one strap per 25 pounds (i.e.: 4 straps for a 100 pound beam). Locate the wood framing on the wall and attach straps using 3 or 3 1/2 inch screws. To keep from burying your mantel in the stone, you can build out the back of your mantel by securing a board to the back. Pick a board size that works best for the depth of your stone. Then attach the straps to the board and mount as described above. This allows more of the beam to protrude above your fireplace. The stonework then goes around the mounted mantel. Notched Back: This is the optimal option for mounting mantels on brick or drywall. Notching is a $45 charge and can be selected when adding the mantel to your cart. The back of your beam will be notched according to the face height: 6" faces will have 3 1/2" tall by 1 1/2" deep notch; 8" faces will have 5" tall by 1 1/2" deep notch. To mount a mantel with a notched back, locate where you want your mantel to rest on your wall and mount your board. Once you receive your mantel, we recommend measuring the notch and fitting your board before mounting the board to the wall. The entire weight of the beam will be on the board, so be sure that it is well secured. For brick or any masonry use mason screws and construction glue to mount the board on the wall. Place your mantel on the board and screw from the top of your mantel down into the board. We suggest using 3 to 4 screws from the top and 2 screws from the bottom up. IMPORTANT NOTE These mantels are made of new pine beams that have been air dried for a minimum of 4 months. Some additional drying will occur as the mantel is acclimated to your home temperature and completes the drying process. At this time, there may be some checking, which is natural as the mantel dries. This in no way affects the stability or the integrity of the mantel. If checking occurs, we offer a touch up stain for your convenience to cover any "fresh" wood that may show. Please contact us and we can ship this out to you at no cost.
