Description: Lovely round vintage La Mode 12K gold filled locket on a 14K gold filled chain. This Retro Era (circa 1920s) jewelry piece features a central rectangular cartouche surrounded by tiny flowers all around. The background against the cartouche is filled with columns of etched pinstripes. All around the outer edge of the front is an etched design of several rows of wavy lines. The back features a circular engine turned textured surface that swirls outward from the center. The sides of both the back and the front of this vintage locket are plain with a shiny finish. The bale is fanned and has tiny raised leafy swirls on the front. NOTE: This 12K gold filled locket is a La Mode piece. La Mode was a trademark used by Ripley and Gowan of Attleboro, Mass. The company's history dates back to the 1880s. Ripley and Gowan filed for use of "La Mode" as a trademark in 1924. The company used the trademark for both women's and men's jewelry. The other hallmark for the R&G (Ripley & Gowan mentioned above) inside a lock shape is also associated with the LaMode name in the Attleboro, Mass. location. I believe this mark was used from about 1915 to 1934. There are 2 round compartments for photos inside this locket. One of these compartments has the original frame and plastic still intact while the other does not. The hinge for this vintage locket is on the bottom and it opens from the top. The locket closes securely. The vintage locket hangs on a new oval link 14K gold filled chain that is 20" long. The chain's spring ring clasp opens and closes securely. The locket is a classic and a nice size that would easily hold two of your favorite round photos.
