In the late 1800s, Empress Victoria (Queen Victoria of England’s first child) decided to build a neo-Gothic castle for herself that combined German Renaissance and English Tudor styles.

Rundale Palace - Summer palace for the Dukes of Courland. Built from 1736-40 & 1764-68. Named for the German place mane, Ruhenthal (Valley of Peace). After the Duchy of Courland was absorbed by Russian Empire, 1795, Catherine the Great presented palace to Count Valerian Zubov, youngest brother of her lover, Prince Platon Zubov.
