In this listing we are pleased to offer a mid century pendant light made of cord and wood. In good condition with the original wooden ceiling canopy. This lamp has a two tier structure of lightly conically shaped white coated metal frames that are covered with a braided cord, that we believe to be made from the sisal plant fibre. We do not exclude a different plant based fibre other than sisal either. The two parts are interconnected with L-shaped wooden bridges. On top of the main inner shade is a wooden finial that only for about 40% sticks out above that shade. We do not know which type of wood was used for the wooden parts. It remotely looks like a type of oak but we believe it is something else. The ceiling canopy/rosette is made of the same wood. Between the main cone shaped inner shade and the outer ring is a space of about 6 centimeters / 2.36 inches. The bulb holder is well hidden on the inside of the main cone where it is attached to the frame with a screw ring around the bulb holder. The lamp lights up very nicely with the light transpiring in between the roping but also lighting downwards. The use of cord in furniture design was popular in the 1970s in both lamp and furniture design. The natural (light brown) colors and feel of plant based rope matched beautifully with the darker brown tones of (especially) teak wood as this lamp perfectly demonstrates. Most notable names in this period were French duo Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet. In lamp design it was especially Temde of Switzerland & Germany that made many different lamp models in teak wood with roping, but there were other as well, such as Danish Fog & Morup where designer Ib Fabiansen created several designs. The lamp is not marked anywhere. Although it is in the style of companies like Temde and Fog & Morup as described above, we believe this lamp was likely made in Eastern Europe at the time, most likely Yugoslavia, possibly for a Western European wholesaler or retailer. We date this lamp to the period 1970 - 1980. The lamp takes 1 E27 bulb with screw type fitting. The brass bulb holder and the ring around it are still the originals. We have rewired lamp cord with a brand new cloth covered lamp cord measuring 120 centimeters / 47.24 inches in a "deer" brown color. The lamp cord is open ended at the ceiling end, ready for hard wiring. It comes with the original wooden ceiling canopy/rosette. Measurements: Shade: Height inclusive of the finial: 38 cm / 14.96 inches Height of the wooden finial: 15 cm / 5.91 inches Diameter of the shade at its widest point: ca 27 cm / ca 10.63 inches Inner diameter of the opening rim at the bottom: 17 cm / 6.69 inches Length of the lamp cord: 120 cm / 47.24 inches Ceiling canopy: Height: 9.5 cm / 3.74 inches Diameter of the opening: 9 cm / 3.54 inches Weight: 702 grams. Condition: Good to very good overall condition. This lamp is in a very agreeable condition with limited signs of age and use. As stated earlier the lamp is, apart from new wiring, in fully original condition. The lamp is free from any serious issues like damage, staining or obvious wear. The (sisal) roping seems to be complete all around both frames. There are no openings in between that are larger than any other. We could also not detect any wear in the roping at the rims that would indicate that any could break through soon. A point that we do want to mention is a minor color difference between the roping on the main cone and the outer ring yet the roping on each part is consistent of color all around. At the rims of the outer ring there are a few darker almost black spots in the roping. We cannot really explain those. It is not that the frame has rusted there. It looks more like a natural ageing of the fibre. These spots are visible. The lacquer that was applied over the wooden parts shows its age and use especially on the three L-shaped bridges. There is some wear at the rims next to some light scratches. It is nothing dramatic but it is visible too. The part of the finial that sticks out above the shade has only a few dots to report. The white coated metal frames of the lamp are in very good condition. Apart from an incidental scuff off the ring for the bulb holder there is no paint loss and hence no rusting anywhere. The bulb holder shows its age and use but is damage free and still perfectly safe to use. The wooden ceiling canopy is in great condition without any chipping or deformations. There are 3 scratches on the outside that are visible. It holds very well on the brand new cloth covered lamp cord. Please refer to the pictures to get the best impression. We have many more pictures available of this item. Do not hesitate to ask for them in case of doubt.
