Mr. Noorda was an internationally known graphic designer who helped introduce a Modernist look to advertising posters, corporate logos and the New York City subway system.

What was transit like in New York City before the Uber’s, Waze’s, Google Maps and Lyft’s of the world existed? Decades ago, prior to cunning app developers employing technology as a means of optimizing travel, the powers that be at the New York Transit Authority sought solace in a little known graphic designer named Massimo Vignelli.

Inside the 5th Avenue-53rd Street subway station, a new site-specific exhibit showcases the connection between modern art and the graphic design of New York City’s transit system. The vinyl displays are a collaboration between MTA Arts & Design and The Museum of Modern Art, which has in its collection several objects related to the creation of the subway’s graphic design and more recent graphic innovations.
