"Crimson Dawn and the rest of the five syndicates have committed unspeakable crimes across the galaxy."
―Enfys Nest[1]

The Five Crime Syndicates, or Five Families of Crime, was a term given to several crime syndicates located in the galaxy. Over the years, membership of the Five shifted and changed.

History[]

Republic Era[]

A grouping known as the Five Crime Syndicates,[3] or Five Families of Crime,[4] controlled much of the underworld as the five most powerful syndicates in the galaxy[5] by 33 BBY. By that year,[6] the Hutt Clan and Crymorah Syndicate were among the five.[5] By 29 BBY,[7] alongside the Hutts and Crymorah, the Pyke Syndicate and Black Sun were among the five.[4]

Imperial Era[]

"Aemon has been with me for a while, and he remembers the old days. Back then, I would have had three times as many guards at a party like this. But that was when the five syndicates worked against each other. Now that we are allies, we cooperate. I suppose he misses the good old days, when we could operate however we wanted. It certainly had some benefits. But our current overseer does encourage some independence, as long as we don't go against his rules about infighting and vengeance. His methods for business got enough of us rich that he silenced most of the protestors. And anyone else, well, he had a method for silencing them, too."
―Dryden Vos, on Maul's rule over the syndicates[2]

The former Sith Maul (pictured) was the shadowy leader of Crimson Dawn and secret puppet master of the Five Crime Syndicates overall.

By the Imperial Era, Crimson Dawn had joined Black Sun, the Crymorah Syndicate, the Hutt Clan, and the Pyke Syndicate as a member of the Five. Although the grouping thus consisted of five major crime syndicates, the smaller Son-tuul Pride was a sixth member.[8] During the time of the Galactic Empire, the renegade Sith Lord Maul had gained control over the syndicates. Though the arrangement provided great riches that silenced Maul's detractors, those critical of Maul did exist and remained unhappy with this arrangement as Maul, in their eyes, "kept them under his boot." However, anyone who voiced open discontent was silenced.[2]

Maul was the shadow leader of Crimson Dawn, which was widely considered as the most powerful and dangerous among the syndicates.[9] On Maul's order, the syndicates were not to war with each other and thus remained allies.[2] Crimson Dawn's alliance with the Pykes was able to stand but remained fragile. Though Crimson Dawn was loathe to risk it,[1] warring among the factions was not uncommon.[10] Still, under Maul's rule such conflict could not be done out in the open.[2] Maul would eventually be separated from galactic affairs by being stranded on the planet Malachor[11] and later be slain in 2 BBY,[12] thereby allowing open warfare amongst the syndicates to resume if tensions rose to those heights.[13]

New Republic Era[]

Sometime after Supreme Leader Snoke's assumption of leadership within the First Order, Master Codebreaker wrote in the Smuggler's Guide new list of powerful syndicates; Black Sun lost their place in the list and became vigo diaspora, the Crymorah was replaced by the Droid Gotra, Crimson Dawn was replaced by both the Son-tuul Pride and the Guavian Death Gang, and, finally, the Pykes and Hutts were replaced by Kanjiklub and the Red Key Raiders.[8]
