"The Force is with me,
And I am one with the Force;
And I fear nothing,
Because all is as the Force wills it.
"
―The Guardian's Mantra, from Collected Poems, Prayers, and Meditations on the Force[1]

The Guardian's Mantra was a prayer spoken by members of the Guardians of the Whills, who protected the Temple of the Kyber in Jedha City on Jedha,[1] and Jedi.[2] The Mantra, written by an unknown author, was found in Collected Poems, Prayers, and Meditations on the Force, edited by a Disciple of the Whills named Kozem Pel.[1] The Mantra was spoken during times when spiritual guidance from the Force was needed.[3]

Matthea Cathley (pictured) recited the Guardian's Mantra to steady herself on Dalna

The Mantra was considered old[2] by 382 BBY,[4] a year within the High Republic Era. During that era, Jedi Padawan Matthea Cathley, who was based on the moon of Jedha during her apprenticeship, was taught the Guardian's Mantra by the Guardians of the Whills.[2] In 382 BBY,[4] while venturing into the Path compound ahead of what exploded into the Battle of Dalna, Cathley repeated the mantra to herself to calm her nerves. After an encounter with the Nameless, she taught the terrified Jedi Knight Azlin Rell the mantra and urged him to say it with her. As they passed more bodies, however, Rell's words began to change to mutter about how "they" were out and going to return.[2]

Following the execution of Order 66 in 19 BBY,[5] former Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano, on the run from mind-controlled clone troopers aboard the Venator-class Star Destroyer[6] Tribunal[7] while it was in hyperspace, recited part of the Guardian's Mantra while using the Force to search for the control chip inside the head of her friend Clone Commander Rex so it could be removed. Despite being unconscious, Rex began to recite along with Tano as she was doing this.[6]

Guardians of the Whills Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus, who were killed while helping to steal the plans to the Death Star during the Battle of Scarif, both spoke the Mantra in their final moments.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

The Guardian's Mantra first appeared in the 2016 movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.[3] It was first identified by name in the junior novel Guardians of the Whills.[1]
