Before You Begin

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • 2.5 mm hex nut driver

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Support wedge kit

  • Torx Plus 3IP 25 mm bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

  1. Position the housing with the logic board facing up.

  2. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel back the polyester film tape on the fan flex cable.

  3. Use the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the end of the fan flex cable connector.

  4. Separate the tips of the ESD-safe tweezers. Insert one tip under the wide portion of the fan flex cable as shown to loosen the adhesive between the fan flex cable and the logic board. Then pull the fan flex cable out of the connector.

    • Caution: Don’t touch any of the small parts on the logic board. Keep the tweezers parallel with the logic board surface to prevent damage.

  5. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the 3IP screw (923-11033) from the fan.

  6. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to remove the nine 2.5 mm hex nut screws from the logic board:

    • Five 2.5 mm hex nut screws (923-11028) (1)

    • Four 2.5 mm hex nut screws (923-11025) (2)

  7. Slightly tilt the logic board away from the housing as shown (1). Then slide the edge of the fan out from under the logic board to remove the fan from the housing (2).

    • Caution: Don’t bend the logic board as you tilt it.

Reassembly

  1. Slightly tilt forward the logic board (1). Then slide the edge of the fan under the logic board (2). Ensure that the screw holes in the fan and logic board align with the screw holes in the housing.

    • Caution: Don’t bend the logic board as you tilt it.

  2. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to reinstall the nine 2.5 mm hex nut screws into the logic board.

    • Five 2.5 mm hex nut screws (923-11028) (1)

    • Four 2.5 mm hex nut screws (923-11025) (2)

  3. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the 3IP screw (923-11033) into the fan.

  4. Slide the end of the fan flex cable into the connector (1). Then flip down the locking lever (2).

  5. Press the polyester film tape onto the end of the fan flex cable.

  6. Press the fan flex cable to adhere it to the logic board.

    • Important: If you’re installing a replacement fan, first connect the fan flex cable to the logic board. Then remove the release liners from the fan flex cable and press the flex cable to adhere it to the logic board.
