When a report is based on data from a large number of sessions, you may see a notice at the top of the report: This report is based on N sessions. This notice alerts you that the report is based on sampled data. Sampling occurs automatically when more than 500k sessions (100M for Google Analytics 360) are collected for a report. This article describes how Google Analytics 360 users can create Unsampled Reports.

Requirements and limitations

Producing Unsampled Reports requires a significant processing load and, as a result, access to this feature is limited. If you’re having trouble finding or using Unsampled Reports, check to see if you meet the account requirement, are hitting a data limit, or are using another feature that’s incompatible with the reports. Further detail on these limitations can be found below.

Reports with long date ranges (e.g., over 1 year) can fail. If you encounter this failure, use a shorter date range and multiple exports.

Account requirements

Unsampled Reports are only available in Google Analytics 360 accounts, to users with the Analyst role on the account. (Viewer role was sufficient prior to the May/June 2015 update.) Make sure you’re signed in to a Google Analytics 360 account.

Data limits

The maximum number of unique dimension values (i.e. rows) that will be reported is 3 million. If you try to export more data rows into an Unsampled Report, all rows over the limit are aggregated into a single row, named (other), in the report.

There are no session limits for Unsampled Reports.

As mentioned above, Unsampled Reports requires significant resources to compute each request, and as a result there is a daily quota assigned to each client property. The quota lives at the property level, but is shared at the view level, so you should be conscious not to consume all of your quota within a single view. Messaging in the request dialog and in the Unsampled Reports list notifies you of the amount of quota consumed by each request and the total quota consumed so far within the day, allowing you to manage your quota.

Reporting interface limits

The Customization > Unsampled Reports page displays a maximum of 3000 previously run reports.

Reports are removed from the page once more than 60 days have passed since the creation date. However the report export file that is sent to the requesting user’s Google Drive folder will never be removed and you can retain access to the data there in perpetuity.

Reports that are requests from the Unsampled API do not include clickable links that let you open the reports in the Analytics interface.

Data sharing principles

All Unsampled Reports are automatically shared with all users who have the Viewer role on the reporting view. This decreases the likelihood of redundant requests (which would count against quota usage) and enables fast and flexible sharing of analysis across your organization.

Incompatible advanced features

Unsampled data is not available in all reports or in the following advanced features:

  • The Compare to previous period feature in any report
  • Flow Visualization
  • Dashboards
  • Sampling that automatically occurs in the Multi-Channel Funnel reports when the data includes more than 1 million conversion paths.
