Get translation help on Pixel 8 with Google Assistant

Important: These features are only available in some languages on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

You can translate content from images, messages, and other content with Google Assistant.

Read aloud and translate content

Important: Read and Translate is currently available in Google Chrome, the Google app, and Google News. It can be used if your Assistant’s language is set to English, Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish, or German. You can translate content into one of the 50+ audio languages available.

To use Google Assistant to read and translate text on your screen:

  1. Open the content you want Google Assistant to read.
  2. Say “Hey Google, read this” or tap Read aloud.
    • Google Assistant will load a media player and play the content.
  3. To stop reading aloud, tap X to close the player.

Tip: You can use the on-screen media player to pause and resume, skip forward and backward, and change the language that Google Assistant is reading aloud.

If you get an error when trying to read aloud and translate content, make sure Google Assistant can use info on your device’s screen.

Check that "Use text from screen" and "Use screenshot" are active:

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps and then Default apps and then Digital assistant app.
  3. Make sure Use text from screen and Use screenshot are on.

Translate text on your screen

Important: Visual translate is currently available on Android phones and tablets.

Ask Google Assistant to translate what’s on your screen across web, apps, messages, and other content.

To translate content on your screen:

  1. Open the content you want Google Assistant to translate.
  2. Say “Hey Google, Translate this” or “Hey Google, Translate it” or tap Translate See details.
    • On-screen text will be selected and translated using Google Lens. You can use the language selectors on screen to adjust the translation options.
  3. To close the translation, tap Back Back.

If you get an error when you translate on-screen text, make sure Google Assistant can use info on your device’s screen.

To check that "Use text from screen" and "Use screenshot" are active:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps and then Default apps and then Digital assistant app.
  3. Make sure Use text from screen and Use screenshot are on.
