You can easily understand messages sent to you in Google Chat through Automatic Translation, which automatically converts messages to your preferred language set in your Google account settings. Learn how to change your language settings.
Tip: If you change your preferred language, it can take up to 24 hours for the feature to update.

You can use Automatic Translation in all languages available for the Neural Machine Translation model.
Turn on Automatic Translation in Chat
After you turn on Automatic Translation, messages are automatically translated. To find the original untranslated content, tap the toggle below the message.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app or Gmail app .
- In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat .
- At the top left, tap Menu Settings .
- Under "General," turn on Automatic Translation.
Important:
- On mobile: Unless you reinstall the app, the setting affects new messages but not the ones that already exist.
- On the Web: Upon refresh, the setting affects messages that already exist.
- If the message is short or the source language is unclear, Automatic translation might not work.
Give feedback about a translation
Gemini for Google Workspace is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.
If the generated draft is inaccurate or looks unsafe, you can let us know by submitting feedback:
- When you give us feedback, you can choose to include your device logs with the request. These logs help Google when you report a technical issue. Learn how to manage device logs on Android.
- At the top right, tap Menu Help & feedback Send feedback .
