You can send direct messages to an individual or multiple people with Google Chat. For ongoing conversations with a team, you can create a Space to message everyone at once.
If available, you can also use apps to automate your work. To use apps in Google Chat, you must use a work or school account and your Google Workspace administrator must give you permission to install apps.

Getting started
Recommended browser and screen readers
Google Chat recommends Chrome and:
- NVDA or JAWS on Windows
- ChromeVox on ChromeOS
- VoiceOver on MacOS
Use Chat as a web application
You can use chat.google.com as a web application rather than a webpage. When you use chat.google.com as a web application:
- Turn off the screen reader web browsing shortcuts. For details, go to Set up your screen reader below.
- Use Chat’s keyboard shortcuts to navigate and read instead of your screen reader’s commands. For details, go to Navigate around Chat below.
Tip: There are times when you should use chat.google.com as a web page and use screen reader browser commands. We point out these times as they occur.
Set up your screen reader
Some screen reader setup is required to use Chat as a web application:
- JAWS: Turn off the Virtual cursor. Press Insert + z until you hear "off."
- NVDA: Turn on focus mode. Press Insert + Spacebar until you hear a click sound like typing on a keyboard.
- ChromeVox: Turn off sticky mode. Quickly press Search twice until you hear "sticky mode disabled."
- VoiceOver: Turn off quick nav. Press Left + Right arrow until you hear "quicknav off."
Open Chat
Go to chat.google.com. When you open Chat, the keyboard focus is on a list of messages in the “Home” list inside the Main landmark. The first time you open Chat, you may want to explore it as a webpage as described in the next section. After you complete your exploration, we recommend you switch to use Chat as a web application as described in Set up your screen reader above.
About the Chat interface
In Chat, there are 4 main areas:
- Top, presented by your screen reader as a Banner landmark: Contains general settings and controls, such as your status, a search bar, and the Google bar to switch to other apps and user accounts.
- Left navigation area, presented as a Navigation landmark: On the left, you can find headings for Shortcuts, Direct messages, and Spaces.
- Chat content, presented as a Main landmark: Contains the most recent messages in the Home section, the currently selected Chat conversation, or Spaces content. This area also includes a list of past messages, a Message edit field for new messages, and action buttons.
- Right side panel, presented as a Complementary landmark: Provides embedded access to other Google products, like Calendar, Keep, Tasks, and Contacts.
Shortcuts
Shortcuts include 3 sections:
Home:
- When you first open Chat, keyboard focus lands on the first message in the list of messages in the Home section.
- The first messages in Chat or Spaces are likely the ones that you haven’t read yet and later messages in the list are older.
- To open that message in the Direct message or Space, press Enter.
- To return to the list of messages in Home, after you read or reply, use normal navigation as below or the browser back.
Mentions:
- This section has a list of most recent messages in Chat or Spaces that mention you using the at-sign.
Starred:
- This section is the list of messages you have “Starred” by using the “More actions” menu for any message. Learn more about starring a message.
From the list of messages in any of the Shortcuts sections:
- To navigate the section heading, press the Left arrow.
- To navigate to the Mentions and Starred section headings, use the Down arrow.
- To navigate to the list of messages in that section, press Enter or the Right arrow.
Tip: If focus doesn’t move to the list of messages from Home, Tab multiple times to the Unread switch, press Space to turn it off, then Tab to the list of messages.
Direct messages
Chats with one person or a group create a list of messages. By default, History is off and messages disappear 24 hours after they arrive. Spaces are for active long-term conversations with a team or group of people. History is on by default.
Spaces with topics or threads
Important: You can no longer create a space organized by topics. Instead, new spaces use threads.
In a space organized by topic, there’s a single panel with a 2-level tree of topics and conversations that each have 1 or more messages. The first level is the topic, and the second level includes all the messages about the topic.
In a space organized by threads, the main panel lists conversations where each message can be the start of a thread. A thread is a set of replies to a message in the main conversation that is presented in a right-side panel.
Navigate around Main Chat content
Chat and Spaces content have 2 modes: Edit and Navigation. When focus is on the reply box, Chat is in Edit mode. To switch from Edit to Navigation mode, press Escape.
Tab and Arrow keys behave differently in each mode:
- In Edit mode: The Up arrow moves to the last posted message and allows you to edit and resend it.
- In Navigation mode:
- Up arrow moves to the most recent message and then to older messages.
- On a message, the Tab key navigates to buttons like: Add reaction (an emoji), Edit message (if you posted it), Mark as unread, and More actions.
- In a Space with Threads:

- Move to newer messages within the main conversation or within a thread with the Down arrow.
