ChromeOS Long-term Support (LTS) release notes

Last updated on: July 16, 2024

For administrators who manage Chrome browser or ChromeOS devices for a business or school.

Full image download required

ChromeOS LTS 120 introduces several critical changes that require a full image download. This means that the download size is approximately 30-50% bigger than a typical LTS download image. This might affect devices in limited bandwidth environments.

A full image download is required for the initial upgrade to ChromeOS LTS 120 (for feature and security updates).

For specific dates, see the Chrome release schedule

To minimize potential disruption, we encourage you to manage your rollout using the following ChromeOS settings:

  1. Cache updates to reduce bandwidth:
If your organization has an intermediate proxy cache set up on its network, you can use it to cache ChromeOS updates.
  2. Use peer-to-peer automatic updates:
If peer-to-peer (P2P) networking is available, peer-to-peer automatic updates allow devices to update from nearby devices of the same model.
  3. Gradually roll out updates:
    1. ChromeOS updates devices using a staged rollout schedule.
    2. Stagger updates to reduce bandwidth usage on a network—updates can be scattered between 1 and 14 days.
  4. Additional blackout windows:
Specify days and times when Chrome temporarily stops automatic checks for updates.
