What is a CS First class?
A CS First class consists of a group of students and one or more CS First lessons. Classes are used to assign lessons to your students and track their progress. The CS First curriculum includes one-hour lessons as well as sequenced multi-day units which can be viewed at g.co/csfirst/curriculum.
One-hour lessons run 45-75 minutes and are designed for students to start and complete simple coding projects in one session. These lessons teach students the basics of block-based coding using the Scratch for CS First editor, and are great for anyone who is new to coding or for special one-day events such as conferences or Hour of Code™. Students will watch a series of videos or work through text instruction and create one coding project with opportunities to personalize their work using “Add-Ons.”
Multi-day units are built with student interests in mind and vary in complexity. They are designed to introduce students to core computer science concepts over eight lessons, and include roughly 10 - 12 hours of content. For each lesson, students will watch a series of videos and create one coding project in the editor, with opportunities to personalize their work using “Add-Ons.” Students will end up with 8 different projects at the end of a multi-day unit.
Students can complete CS First lessons independently, but there are opportunities to collaborate with one another throughout the experience.
