Overview

Help me Write is a Story Editor feature which helps institutions write more clear, concise stories using Google's Gemini technology.

How to use

To use these features, access the Story Editor. The Gemini assisted features will be available in the text editing flow for story components. As a reminder, instructions on how to use the Story Editor are here.
The feature can support in rewriting a text from an existing source to improve it or shorten it, or it can support in writing text from scratches. 

Help with rewriting

Case 1: Suggest a new Story Title

What it does: Suggest an improved story title based on the text of the story

How to use it:

1. Ensure that you choose a story with sufficient story text to suggest a reasonable title
2. On the title page, click into the text box and then click the "rewrite" button:
   
   
   
   Note: rewrite may take around 15 seconds.
    
3. Review the drafts shown in the dialog box and update text as outlined in the Using the Help Me Write Dialog section.

Case 2: Rewrite existing slide

 

What it does: For a panel with existing text, suggest text that is more clearly and concisely worded

How to use it:

1. On the panel you wish to rewrite, click the "rewrite" button
2. Click the "rewrite" button in the Dialog box
3. Review the drafts shown in the dialog box and update text as outlined in the Using the Help Me Write Dialog section.

Help with writing from Scratch

Case 3: Write a Title from a Description

What it does: Given a description of the story you want to write, suggests a story title and subtitle

How to use it:

1. Click on the "Create story" button
2. On the popup dialog, click on "Yes, help me write" and briefly describe your story.
   
   
    
3. Review the drafts shown in the dialog box and update text as outlined in the Using the Help Me Write Dialog section.

Case 4: Write a slide from a long text

 

What it does: Given a piece of text you want to summarize for the panel you want to write, suggest a title and caption

 

How to use it:

1. On a new panel with an image, click into the text box.
2. Click on the "Summarize my text" button:
   
   
    
3. Paste your long text in the Help Me Write dialog:
   
   
    
4. Review the drafts shown in the dialog box and update text as outlined in the Using the Help Me Write Dialog section. 

Case 5: Write a slide by a visual description of the image

 

What it does: Given an image, visually describe it to generate panel text

 

How to use it:

1. On a new panel with an image, click into the text box.
2. Click on the "Describe the image" button:
   
   
    
3. Review the drafts shown in the dialog box and update text as outlined in the Using the Help Me Write Dialog section. 

Case 6: Write a slide by a describing the creator

 

What it does: Given an image, describe the creator associated with the image

 

How to use it:

1. On a new panel with an image, click into the text box.
2. Click on the "Write about the creator" button:
   
3. Review the drafts shown in the dialog box and update text as outlined in the Using the Help Me Write Dialog section.

 

Case 7: Write a slide by a describing what you want to write about

 

What it does: Describe what you want to find in the panel to write the text

 

How to use it:

1. On a new panel with an image, click into the text box.
2. Click on the "Custom prompt" button:
   
3. Paste your long text in the Help Me Write dialog:
   
4. Review the drafts shown in the dialog box and update text as outlined in the Using the Help Me Write Dialog section.

Using the Help Me Write Dialog

 

After you choose your action from the story editor, you will be shown "Help Me Write" editor dialog that will allow you to view Gemini's suggestion and update your story text accordingly. The dialog looks like this:

 

On the left hand side will be the text that you will add to the story, and on the right hand side are 3 drafts of text suggested by Gemini.

You have the option to either "Insert" the text into the left hand side edit dialog - if you want to edit multiple suggestions together, or replace the text with the Gemini suggestion.

After you've finished editing, you can either "Update" the main story, or cancel and erase your changes.
