Use quick phrases on Google Nest Hub Max

Use quick phrases on your Nest Hub Max to get Google Assistant's help with everyday tasks without "Hey Google." When you set up quick phrases, you can simply tell Google Assistant to set a timer, turn off the lights, and do much more.

Quick phrases are available on Nest Hub Max in the US in English.

Add quick phrases

Before you start

To set up quick phrases, you'll need to do the following:

Turn on Voice Match on your Nest Hub Max.
Switch Google Assistant's first language to English (United States).
- Quick phrases won't work if English (United States) is the second language listed instead of the first.
- The person who first set up the Nest Hub Max must set English (United States) as their first language in the Google Home app. Otherwise, quick phrases won't work for anyone else who uses the Nest Hub Max.

Select quick phrases

Open the Google Home app .
At the top right, tap your account Assistant settings Quick phrases.
Tap Other devices in the section "All quick phrases," tap Add next to the phrases you want to use.

Use quick phrases

To use a quick phrase that you've added, just say the phrase to your Nest Hub Max. You don't need to say "Hey Google."

Quick phrases are adaptable, so you can add specific details and speak naturally. For example, if you choose the quick phrase "Turn lights on & off," the following phrases may all work:

"Turn on the lights"
"Turn on kitchen lights"
"Turn the kitchen lights on"

Other adaptations of popular quick phrases may include:

"Set a timer for 10 minutes"
"Increase the light brightness"
"What's the weather forecast"

Note: Quick phrases are not available on your Nest Hub Max while Guest Mode is on.

Check your quick phrases

To check the quick phrases you've added, open the Google Home app .
At the top right, tap your account Assistant settings Quick phrases.
Tap Other devices check the section "Your quick phrases."

Remove quick phrases

Open the Google Home app .
At the top right, tap your account Assistant settings Quick phrases.
Tap Other devices Delete next to the phrases you want to remove.

How it works

Google Assistant is designed to wait in standby mode until it detects an activation. When in standby mode, Google Assistant won't send what you are saying to Google or anyone else.

Once Google Assistant detects an activation, it exits standby mode and sends your request to Google servers.

Google Assistant may activate when you didn't intend it to, if it incorrectly detects you want its help. For example, it might activate if you say something similar to a quick phrase. We are constantly working to make our systems better at reducing unintended activations.

Google Assistant also uses Voice Match so quick phrases will work just for those who turn it on. If others want to use quick phrases, they can set them up in their Home app or Assistant app settings.
