Play Android audio on Google Nest or Home devices

Cast the audio from your Android phone or tablet to your Google Nest or Home speaker or display.

Note:

  • This feature is only available on devices running Android 9.0 or later.
  • Be sure to not run "Power saving mode" or "Battery Saver" on your Android device. This can limit the processing power of your device, which could affect the performance of the Cast audio feature.

Important: The "Microphone" permission in the Google Play Services app needs to be turned on to successfully use this feature with your speaker or display. If you don't have this permission turned on, the Cast audio session will immediately disconnect after you try to connect.

To turn on microphone permissions:

  1. On your Android device, tap Settings Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap Apps and then All Apps and then Google Play Services and then Permissions.
  3. Tap Microphone and turn on "Allow only while using the app."

Cast audio from your Android device

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network or linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Tap Favorites or Devices .
  4. Tap and hold your device's tile.
    • Speakers: Tap Cast my audio and then Cast audio.
    • Displays: Tap Cast my screen and then Cast screen.
  5. On your Android device, start the desired content. It will play on your speaker or display.

Control audio that's playing from your Android device

To control the audio that you're casting, use the media controls in the content provider's app on your Android device. Depending on the provider and type of media, you can pause, resume, control volume, and more.

When your Android device is casting audio, its volume buttons control the volume on your speaker or display.

You can also use voice commands on your speaker or display to control the volume and stop casting.

To do this: Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then:
Stop playing Android audio on your speaker or display "Stop"
Control volume "Louder"
"Set volume to 40%"

Stop casting audio from your Android device

From the notification drawer:

  1. Pull down the notification drop-down drawer on your Android device.
  2. On the notification bar, tap Disconnect.

From the Google Home app:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network or linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Tap Favorites or Devices .
  4. Tap and hold your device's tile.
  5. Select Stop casting or Stop mirroring .
