Fix an incorrect Wi-Fi password on a Nest speaker or display

During setup, if you select your Wi-Fi name and enter your Wi-Fi password, but connection fails and returns as an error, try the steps below:

Initial checklist

  1. Under “Network name?” check if you selected the correct Wi-Fi name from the dropdown list.
  2. Check if you selected the option to show the password when you enter your password.
  3. The password must include both upper and lowercase letters.
  4. The password is case sensitive. Make sure you enter the upper and lowercase letters that you want correctly.
  5. Check if you missed a letter or a number.
  6. The password must be a minimum of 8 characters long.

General troubleshooting

If you checked off all the steps above and the password is still incorrect, try one of the steps below and then try again. If it still doesn't work, move to the next step.

Step 1. Reboot your Google Nest or Home device

  1. Disconnect the power cable from the speaker or display.
  2. Reconnect power cable back into the speaker or display.

Step 2. Reboot your Wi-Fi router

Power off the router and power it back on. Note: Most routers just require that you unplug the power source and then plug it back in to reboot.

Step 3. Force close the Google Home app

  1. From an iOS device
    • Press the Home button two times quickly (for iOS 9 and older) or slide your thumb upwards, then to the left for iOS 10 and newer). You’ll see small previews of your recently used apps.
    • Scroll to find the Google Home app Google Home app.
    • Swipe up on the app’s preview to close it.
  2. From an Android device
    • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold.
    • Scroll to find the Google Home app Google Home app.
    • Swipe up on the app’s preview to close it.

Step 4. Try to set up your Nest speaker or display again

When you get to the password portion of the setup process, do the following:

  1. From an Android device: If the “Get Wi-Fi password option” appears when you select the desired Wi-Fi network:
    1. Tap Ok.
    2. If the password fails, select No thanks and then manually input the Wi-Fi password.
      • To show the password you enter, tap the eye icon on the password box.
      • The password must be a minimum of 8 characters long.
  2. From an iOS device: Under the password box, check the box for "Show password." This setting shows you exactly what you type to be sure that it's accurate, instead of the black dots that appear after you input a character.
