Update Nest products and apps

If your Nest products have a reliable internet connection, they should update their software automatically. Keep in mind that we gradually push updates to Nest products in batches, so your product might not get updated immediately. You can also set your phone to automatically install the latest version of the Nest app and the Google Home app.

Update the Home app and Nest app

If you need to troubleshoot an issue, a key step is to make sure that you have the latest version of the app that includes the latest bug fixes and features. It's recommended that you set your phone to get automatic app updates so you get the latest features and improvements as soon as they're available.

To automatically update apps, go to the following articles:

Troubleshooting

If a new software version is available for your thermostat but it hasn't updated, it could be caused by one or more of the following:

  • Your thermostat isn't connected to a reliable internet connection through the Wi-Fi network. Your thermostat or the app lets you know when there's a connection issue.

  • The battery charge is below 3.7 volts. If so, your thermostat waits until the battery is charged enough to update its software.
Troubleshoot power issues for Nest thermostats
  • The heating or cooling system is running. Turn your thermostat off to check if that fixes the issue.
  • There's a problem with the wiring. You need to fix any wiring issues before your thermostat can update its software.

Note: Some thermostat models can receive updates regardless of whether it has been added to an account in the app, as long as it's connected to Wi-Fi.
