Use Google Kids Space tabs

Each tab is set up to help kids easily find what they are interested in.

• Recently opened content: In each tab, kids can find recently opened content in the “Continue” section.
• Interests bar: Just below “Continue,” the “Interests” bar suggests content related to topics they show interest in.
  • Tip: To get suggested apps and content for a topic area, tap the topic.
• My Stuff: To find all the content you’ve downloaded, at the top left, tap My stuff.

Search: To search for a particular topic, at the top right, tap Search . Learn how Google Kids Space search works.

Your child’s interests may change over time. Kids can update their interests whenever they like.

1. In the Play, Watch, Read, or Make tabs, scroll to the far right of the interest icons.
2. Tap Change Interests.
3. Help your child tap categories they enjoy and deselect categories that no longer interest them as much.
4. Tap Done.

To add content that’s not available in Google Kids Space, parents can add more apps and books through the Google Play store.

1. At the bottom right, press and hold the Parent menu .
2. Tap Add more apps Go to Google Play.
3. Search for books or apps that you want to add to Google Kids Space. Before you add them, you have to approve the download and, for paid content, approve the purchase request.
   • You can find apps and books you’ve added under “My stuff”

Tip: You can also add books to Google Kids Space when you share them through the Family Library.

The content in Google Kids Space is selected in different ways.

• Apps: Apps that Google Kids Space recommends in the tabs are Teacher Approved. Parents can also add apps they want their kids to experience. Learn more about Teacher Approved apps.
  • Tip: If you download an app in Google Kids Space, it’s Teacher Approved. If you download an app from somewhere else, like the Play Store, it might not be Teacher Approved.
• Books: Books are curated by experts.
• Videos: Videos are generated using a mix of user input, human review, and criteria like popularity and relevance.

In the Play tab, children can find apps already installed on their device, as well as Google Kids Space recommended apps that you can install at no charge. Learn more about Teacher Approved apps.

You can choose to let your child download and install Teacher Approved apps at no charge through Google Kids Space without prior approval or you can require parental approval for each app install. You can install apps beyond those recommended by Google Kids Space through the Google Play store, available through the Parent menu.

How Play apps are selected

Apps that come with Google Kids Space have been approved by teachers and children's education and media specialists. Apps are only approved if they are thoughtfully designed, fun, and age-appropriate.

Google Kids Space recommended apps are organized by audience age group. The apps your child finds are based on the age listed for them in their Google Account.

Our Teacher Approved apps are updated regularly as apps are added or removed. Availability of apps may change without notice. Apps removed from the Teacher Approved collection won’t automatically be deleted from your child's device. To prevent your child from accessing an app that’s no longer part of Google Kids Space, you can block it with Google Kids Space or Family Link.

Remove an app

Important: If you remove an app from Google Kids Space, you uninstall it from the device.

1. In Google Kids Space, press and hold the app.
2. Tap More Uninstall OK.

Block an app in a tab

Important: If you block the app in a tab, it removes it from the Google Kids Space experience but not from the device.

1. In Google Kids Space, press and hold the app.
2. Tap More Block OK.

Important: Google Kids Space prompts parents to set up Google Play Books when you first start GKS.

In the Read tab, depending on region, children have access to books at no charge that were selected by experts. Children also have access to books purchased through Google Play Books, or children's books added to their family library.

How the books in the Read tab are selected

The "All" section and the interest-based filters of the Read tab are populated with content from Google Play Books at no charge in Google Kids Space. The books currently available to Google Kids Space users were selected by experts. Some are specially licensed from publishers specifically for Google Kids Space and otherwise wouldn’t be accessible at no charge.

Content in the Read tab varies by region. The "My Books" section of the Read tab populates with books your child owns through Google Play Books or through their Family Library. Any books a child opens from the "All" section is automatically added to "My Books."

Tip: Factors such as age-appropriateness, quality of writing and illustrations, and diversity help determine book quality ratings.

Reading options

When kids open books in Google Kids Space, they can select from different options.

• Read independently: Read the book without assistance.
• Practice: Read the book with extra help. Tap Practice .
• Listen: The book is read out loud. Tap Read .
• Skip: Move through the book. Tap Pages .
• Mark: Bookmark any page so they can easily return to it later. Kids can find the Bookmark  along the progress bar.
• Kid friendly dictionary: An age appropriate dictionary is built into Google Kids Space:
  • To open the dictionary, tap any word in a book and then tap the question mark .

Add books to Google Kids Space from family library

Step 1: Turn on Family Library in Play settings

Step 2: Add books from Family Library

1. At the bottom right, tap the Parent menu .
2. Tap the Play Store app Add more apps  Go to Google Play.
3. At the top right, tap the Profile icon Library Books.
4. Tap and hold the book you want to add.
5. From the pop-up menu, tap Add to Family Library.

Remove books from Google Kids Space

1. At the bottom right, tap the Parent menu .
2. Tap the Play Store app Add more apps  Go to Google Play.
3. At the top right, tap Profile icon Library  Books.
4. Tap and hold the book you want to remove.
5. From the pop-up menu, tap Remove download.

In the Watch tab, depending on region, children can access recommended videos sourced from YouTube Kids.

Important: You must set up YouTube Kids before your child can watch videos in the Watch tab. If you disable YouTube Kids access, no videos appear in the tab and there is a message in the tab that reads “Blocked.” Once enabled, kids find videos at the top of the screen when they open the Watch tab.

When kids open a video, they are taken to YouTube Kids and need to navigate back to Google Kids Space with the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen.

Remove or block videos

To remove videos:

1. Tap My Stuff.
2. Tap and hold the video you want to remove.
3. Tap More Uninstall OK.

To block videos:

1. Tap My Stuff.
2. Tap and hold the video you want to block.
3. Tap More Block OK.

In the Make tab, depending on region, children can access recommended videos about offline activities sourced from YouTube Kids. You must set up YouTube Kids before your child can access Make content.

Important: You must set up YouTube Kids before your kid can watch videos in the Make tab. If you disable YouTube Kids access, you won’t find any videos in the tab and there is a message that reads “Blocked.”

When a child taps to watch a video, they are taken to YouTube Kids and need to navigate back to Google Kids Space with the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen.
