Learn how the Google Kids Space homepage works

When your child opens Google Kids Space, they find a custom homepage with a library of quality content for kids.

Navigate Google Kids Space

Important:

  • The “Watch” and “Make” tabs open in countries or regions where YouTube Kids is available.
  • The “Read” tab opens in countries or regions where Google Play Books is available.
  • Books, apps, and app content may depend on the availability in a particular country or region.

Kids can use the navigation bar on the bottom of the screen and tap one of these icons:

Home

  • Children can access Google Kids Space activities and suggestions for exploration. They can find cards with educational facts and jokes on them. They can also use the cards to do searches and get suggestions related to their interests. Learn how to use Kids Space cards to find content.

Play

  • Children can find recommended apps at no charge in addition to the ones already installed on their device. You can choose a permission for your child to download without prior approval or require pre-installation parental approval for each app that is installed. You can also get to content not part of Google Kids Space through a Parent menu. Learn how to find quality apps for kids.

Read

  • Children can find books purchased through Google Play Books or licensed from publishers for Google Kids Space at no extra cost.

Watch

Make

  • Children can find recommended videos about offline activities sourced from YouTube Kids. To find recommended Watch content, you must create a YouTube Kids profile.

Tip: You can control what apps your child may download through the Family Link app.

Use Kids Space cards to find content

Your child can find cards with educational facts and jokes on them. They can also use the cards to do searches and get suggestions related to their interests.

  • My apps: Apps that were recently downloaded or used display here.
  • Joke of the day: Every day, a new kid-friendly joke appears for your child.
  • Fun facts: Your child can find educational facts for kids to foster their curiosity and growth.
  • Extra content cards: These highlight content from the different tabs based on your child’s interests.
  • Suggested searches: When a suggestion appears on a card, your child can tap the suggested topic to go to content related to it.

Tips:

  • Search results use content from across tab categories.
  • To hear the title text on each discovery card or the joke or fact of the day, on the card, tap Speak .
  • To use the microphone, you must turn on Google Speech Services in your Settings on your tablet, if available.
    • To search with your voice:
      1. Tap Search and then Microphone.
      2. To talk, tap Microphone .
Update a character

To update your child’s character:

  1. Go to the "Home" tab.
  2. At the left, tap their character.
  3. To select features for their character, scroll through the menu options.
  4. In the top right, tap Done.

Tip: When you complete these steps, the new character is found on the home screen automatically.

Update your child’s interests

Google Kids Space recommends quality content for your kid based on interests that they choose. Since your child’s interests may change over time, they can update their interests whenever they like.

  1. Tap the Play, Watch, Read, or Make tab.
  2. Scroll left until you find Change interests .
  3. To select categories that your child enjoys, tap the icons.
  4. Tap Done.

Tip: To deselect categories, tap the icons again.
