Use Google Maps in dark theme

You can change the theme of Google Maps on your mobile device. Dark theme makes your screen easier to read and help to reduce battery use.

Tip: There are separate settings for dark theme when you explore and navigate in Google Maps.

Turn on dark theme while you explore

Important: All of these steps are only available on Android 10 or Q and up. Learn how to check your Android version

  1. On your Android phone 10+ phone, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Settings Settings and then Theme.
  3. Select one of the following options:
    • Always in light theme: Dark theme is always disabled in Maps, regardless of system settings.
    • Always in dark theme: Dark theme is always enabled in Maps, regardless of systems settings.
    • Same as device theme: Follow Android system Dark theme setting. In Android 10+ this is under Settings Settings and then Display.
  4. Tap Save.

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Settings Settings and then Navigation Settings.
  3. Scroll to “Map display.”
  4. Under Color scheme, tap:
    • Day: To disable dark theme in Maps, regardless of system settings.
    • Night: To enable dark theme in Maps, regardless of system settings.
    • Automatic: To follow theme selected for Android system under Settings Settings and then Display.
