Share your real-time location with others in Google Maps

You can choose who can find your location and how long you share it in Google Maps. Location Sharing works even when Timeline is turned off.

People you share your location with in Google Maps can always find your:

  • Name and photo.
  • Device’s recent location even when Google apps aren’t being used.
  • Device’s battery power and if it’s charging.
  • Arrival and departure time if they add a Location Sharing notification.

They can also find other info depending on how you’re sharing.

Share your location in Google Maps

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
    • Make sure you’re signed in to your Google Account.
    • Make sure you’ve added the person’s Gmail address to your Google Contacts.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing and then New share Add people.
  3. Choose how long you want to share your location.
  4. Tap the profile of the person with whom you want to share your location.
    • If asked about your contacts, allow Google Maps access.
  5. Tap Share.
Troubleshoot issues with Location Sharing after 24 hours
Important: The Location Sharing recipient must have a Gmail account.

If you have issues with your Location Sharing for more than 24 hours:

  1. Verify your age.
  2. If age verification didn’t fix the issue:
    1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
    2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing and then New share Add people.
    3. Under “Share your real-time location,” select Until you turn this off.
    4. On the people suggestions row, swipe to the right and tap More More.
    5. In the search bar, enter a name, phone number, or email.
    6. Tap Share.
Share with a person who doesn’t have a Google Account

To send your location to someone who doesn’t have a Google Account, share your location with a link.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps and sign in.
    • Make sure you’re signed in to your Google Account.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing and then New share Add people.
  3. Send your location sharing link.
    • To send your link through iMessage: Tap Message.
    • To send your link through another messaging app:
      1. Tap More options Share.
      2. Select a different app.

Your real-time location can be shared with people who have this link for up to 24 hours.

Stop sharing your location in Google Maps

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing.
  3. Tap the profile of the person you don’t want to share your location with anymore.
  4. Tap Stop.

Share your estimated time of arrival

When you start to navigate by car, foot, or bicycle, you can share your destination, estimated arrival time, and current location.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Set a destination.
  3. After you start navigation, swipe up on the information card.
  4. Tap Share trip progress.
  5. Tap the profile of the person whom you want to share with and then Share.
  6. When you reach your destination or stop navigation, you stop sharing your location.
    • To stop sharing before you arrive:
      1. Swipe up on the information card.
      2. Tap Stop sharing.

Get someone’s location in Google Maps

Find someone's location

You can find someone on your map when they share their location with you.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app​ Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing.
  3. Tap the profile of the person you want to find.
    • To update the person's location: Tap on the person's icon and then More More and then Refresh.
Ask for someone’s location

If you shared your location with someone, or they shared with you in the past, you can ask for their location in Maps.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing.
  3. Tap a contact who shared with you before.
  4. Tap Request.

After you ask for your contact’s location, they get your email address and a notification. They can now:

  • Find your profile to verify who you are.
  • Share their location with you.
  • Ignore your request.
  • Block you.
    • If someone blocks your request, you can no longer ask for their location.

Hide or show someone's location

Hide someone's location

If you don’t want someone’s real-time location on your map, you can hide it. You can turn their location back on at any time.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. On the map, tap their icon.
  3. At the bottom, tap More More.
  4. Tap Hide from map.

Turn on someone’s location you’ve hidden

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app​ Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing and then More More.
  3. At the bottom, tap their information.
  4. At the top, tap Unhide.

Deny or block a request for your location

If you get a request for your location in Google Maps and don’t want to share it, you can:

  • Deny the request: Tap No.
    • Your location isn’t shared.
  • Block the requester: Tap Block.
    • Your location isn’t shared and the requester can’t ask for your location anymore. When you block someone, it affects how they can contact you in other Google products. Learn more about blocking users.

Unblock someone

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app​ Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing.
  3. At the top, tap More More and then Blocked users.
  4. Next to the person you want to unblock, tap Remove Remove.

Location Sharing availability

When you open Location Sharing, you might get a warning message if:

  • You're in a country or region where you can’t share your location.
  • Location Sharing isn’t available for your Google Workspace domain.
    • To turn on Location Sharing, ask your administrator.
