Learn about Dictionary boxes on Google

When you search on Google, you may find Dictionary boxes that are useful and relevant. Dictionary boxes show definitions from external expert sources and might include:

  • Related images
  • Pronunciations
  • Translations
  • Other information

Tip: When your search starts with "Define" or "What does it mean," you might get a result with a Dictionary box.

Origin of the information in the Dictionary tables

Important: Dictionary boxes always include definitions, but may not include the rest of the info.

Definitions

Google doesn’t create or edit definitions. Results with Dictionary tables don’t reflect the opinions of Google.

We use licensed definitions from third-party Dictionary compilers such as:

  • Examples
  • Synonyms
  • Antonyms
  • Etymology

Tip: At the top of a Dictionary box, you can usually find the provider of the definition.

How Google handles offensive definitions

To provide more comprehensive results, we've included definitions of offensive terms. Our partners label these terms to describe their proper context of use as:

  • Vulgar
  • Derogatory
  • Offensive

We only display an offensive definition by default when it’s the primary meaning of the term.

When Google removes a definition

If a definition causes serious problems, partners can notify us for modification. We might temporarily remove the definition until the partner's revised version is ready.

When the partner publishes the change, there may be a slight delay before it shows in our systems.

Other content of Dictionary boxes

Images
Some Dictionary boxes have images that aren’t from the same partners that provide the definitions. At Google, we use licensed images from other sources and our systems automatically select which ones to display.
Pronunciations

Some Dictionary boxes have an option to reproduce pronunciations. These pronunciations have the following characteristics:

  • They’re automatically generated by Google or come from third-party providers.
  • They may vary based on the region.
    • For example, an English word might have an American and a British pronunciation.
Translations
Some Dictionary boxes allow you to translate the term into another language. Translations are provided with the help of Google Translate.

Report a problem with a Dictionary box

You can send us your feedback if you find a problem in any part of a Dictionary box, such as:

  • Definition
  • Pronunciation
  • Image

To submit feedback, follow these steps:

  1. Go to google.com.
  2. Search for the definition of a word.
  3. At the bottom right of the Dictionary result, click Feedback.
Tip: If you encounter issues with definitions, we recommend you to send feedback directly to the external source that provides the definition when you select definitions from [provider name] at the top of the Dictionary box.

How your feedback helps us

When you report a definition, we do the following:

  • May share the issue with the third-party partner who provides the definition.
  • Don’t share your individual feedback.
  • Don’t share info that personally identifies you.

Your feedback on other features, like images or pronunciation, help us improve what we include in Dictionary boxes.
