Manage asset metadata

These features are only available to partners who use YouTube Studio Content Manager.
After you’ve uploaded your assets, you can go back and edit the metadata associated with your assets. If you’ve uploaded multiple versions of an asset’s metadata, you can track and compare what changes have been made.

Edit asset metadata

To update an asset's metadata:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. From the left menu, select Assets .
  3. Click the title of the asset whose metadata you want to edit.
  4. On the Asset details page, click a field you want to edit and make your changes.
    • If you made an error, you can click UNDO CHANGES.
  5. To save your edits, click SAVE.

Track metadata history

To view older versions of an asset's metadata:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. From the left menu, select Assets .
  3. Click the title of the asset whose metadata you want to review.
  4. On the Asset details page, find the History box on the right. History shows the history of metadata updates made to the asset.
  5. To view an older version of the asset’s metadata, click a row below the first row. To go back to viewing the latest version, select the first row.
  6. To restore an older version of an asset’s metadata, click REVERT.
    • To cancel reverting to an older version, click UNDO CHANGES.
  7. To save your changes, click SAVE
    • Note: To edit an older metadata version, click REVERT, make your edits, then click SAVE.

Compare metadata versions

Use the Compare Metadata feature to view the active display metadata for an asset. If an asset has been merged or has shared ownership, you can also view the metadata uploaded by the other partners. To use the Compare Metadata feature:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. From the left menu, select Assets .
  3. Click the title of the asset whose metadata versions you want to compare.
  4. On the Asset details page, click COMPARE METADATA in the top right. The Compare Metadata page will open.
    • The green Display icon  indicates that metadata set is the active display metadata for the asset. It’s the version that's surfaced to uploaders when they get a claim and in features such as Music in this Video
      • The most complete and newest metadata set gets marked with the Display icon
    • A light blue border around a value indicates that this data is different from the newest metadata you’ve uploaded. The non-matching values appear in bold.
Tip: On the Compare Metadata page, you can export the metadata to a .CSV file by clicking the download icon in the top-right corner.

More info for music label partners

If you’re a music label partner, you may notice more details in the History box and the Compare Metadata page.

History

  • The History box will include the sound recording share associated with the metadata version.
  • The blue Share label is the active share and indicates the metadata from the active share is used as the current metadata set.

Compare metadata

  • Metadata versions are grouped by provider, release identifiers (such as UPC or ISRC), and the delivery source.
Tip: To view metadata uploaded by publishing partners, click Shares  in the left menu of the Asset details page, then click COMPARE METADATA.

More info for music publishing partners

If you’re a music publishing partner, you may notice more details in the History box and the Compare Metadata page.

History

  • You can also access the metadata history on sound recording assets that embed a sound recording share. On the Asset details page, click the Sound recording shares tab at the top of the page.
  • When viewing a composition share asset, click VIEW METADATA HISTORY for more details on older versions of the asset’s metadata.

Compare metadata

To view composition metadata uploaded by other publishing partners:
  1. On the Asset details page, click the Sound recording shares tab at the top of the page.
  2. From the left menu, select Shares .
  3. Click COMPARE METADATA.
Tip: You can also click COMPARE METADATA on the Ownership & Policy  page when you’re reviewing the ownership and match policy set by other publishing partners.
