Hallmark Vet Candace Cameron Bure Makes Move to GAC Family, to Develop ‘Family and Faith-Filled Programming’
Another Hallmark Channel movie queen is giving up her throne for an opportunity to reign over its newest competitor.
Candace Cameron Bure, who has headlined more than two dozen movies for Hallmark since 2008, is the latest actress to ink a deal with GAC Family (fka Great American Country), following Danica McKellar.[pmc_inline_gallery]
As announced by GAC on Tuesday morning, Bure will develop, produce and star in movies and television across GAC Family and GAC Living. She also will take on a prominent executive role at the company to oversee/curate programming for the networks as a whole, create year-round seasonal celebration content for the networks, and play a key role in the company’s annual Great American Christmas franchise.
“I’m very excited to develop heartwarming family and faith-filled programming and make the kind of stories my family and I love to watch,” Bure said in a statement. “I am constantly looking for ways that I can inspire people to live life with purpose. GAC fits my brand perfectly; we share a vision of creating compelling wholesome content for an audience who wants to watch programming for and with the whole family. Great, quality entertainment with a positive message is what my partnership with GAC is all about!”
TVLine hears that Bure’s GAC deal is exclusive to rom-coms and holiday fare, but her Aurora Teagarden Mysteries franchise at Hallmark is also dunzo.
“Crown Media has enjoyed over 10 years of collaboration with Candace,” a rep for Hallmark’s parent company tells TVLine. “We respect her decision and thank her for her many contributions.”
Bure’s most recent Hallmark outings were last November’s The Christmas Contest and this February’s Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: Haunted by Murder.
As previously reported, the newly rebranded GAC Family is run by Bill Abbott, former CEO of Hallmark Channel‘s parent company Crown Media Family Networks. Abbott left his longtime Crown Media post in January 2020 following Hallmark’s decision to stop airing a commercial featuring a same-sex wedding — a decision the network quickly reversed amid a sea of controversy.
GAC Family is already in business with a number of other Hallmark vets, including Lori Loughlin. The When Calls the Heart alum returned to acting in December (following a two-month prison sentence for her role in the infamous college admissions scandal) via the spinoff When Hope Calls, which relocated from Hallmark Movies Now to GAC Family for Season 2.
In addition to Bure, McKellar and Loughlin, former Home & Family hosts Cameron Mathison and Debbie Matenopoulos recently migrated to GAC Family, where they lorded over Welcome to the Great American Christmas, a Christmas special previewing the network’s inaugural slate of holiday films — a slate of originals headlined entirely by Hallmark grads, including Mathison, Susie Abromeit, Nick Bateman, Rukiya Bernard, Cindy Busby, Sara Canning, Dillon Casey, Torrance Coombs, Trevor Donovan, Brendan Fehr, Jennie Garth, Maggie Lawson, Jen Lilley, Sarah Lind, Daniel Lissing, Jessica Lowndes, Matthew MacCaull, Chad Michael Murray, Sam Page, Merritt Patterson, Christopher Russell, Becca Tobin, Jill Wagner and Dewshane Williams.
WOW. Sorry to see Candace leave Hallmark. So does this mean there will be no more Aurora Teagarden mysteries done??? If that is true, that makes me very sad because they were soooo good.

I’m just thinking of those actors who did a GAC movie last Christmas. I can’t think of one who has had a new Hallmark project announced since. Maybe I missed it?
For example, I just checked Cindy Busby’s IMDB page. Her last credit is the Christmas movie she did for GAC last year. Nothing since which is very unlike her. I don’t know. Maybe she’s pregnant or something else is going on in her life to make her take some time off. She worked all through the pandemic so it’s not that. It’s just very unlike her though not to have done at least one or two more Hallmark movies since late last year. I hope she hasn’t been blackballed.
I love Christmas romcoms (including the ones on Lifetime) so it would be nice if the genre wasn’t turned into a war zone and our favorite actors could bounce between networks freely without any sort of retaliation.

IMDB does tend to be late in the game when it comes to adding TV movie credits for some reason. Antonio Cupo’s IMDB page still doesn’t have the Lifetime movie he did called Wrath that aired this past weekend.

Yep, May 7th “Warming Up to You.” I also don’t think she ever had an exclusive contract though, as two of her films last season were for Lifetime, not Hallmark or GAC.
Hallmark killed Jill Wagner’s Mystery 101 which did GREAT in the ratings. They are slitting their own throats.

I don’t think the Mystery 101 series has been officially canceled, there has been no announcement from Hallmark, only speculation and rumor based on the way the last movie ended. There were several interviews done after that movie and none of the actors, writers or directors seemed to think they were finished.

Unless their contract says they do movies for other stations, then the actors and actresses can do so. If you look closely many hallmark actors and actresses are staring in movie on life time and hallmark. The actors left of their own accord because they felt like hallmark doesn’t fit their values.

GAC does not have enough movies it has too many sitcoms I changed my cable so I could watch GAC because of the people on Hallmark leaving but they don’t have enough all year long I want to see him all year
I just inquired with my provider to pick up GAC. I am still a cable person because streaming is still as expensive or more than cable. I hope they consider GAC.

When Hallmark movies the last couple of years suffered from incredibly poor scripts, truly bizarre miscasting, and lousy production quality (often accompanied by really awful “movie music” so loud it drowned out the speaking parts, I finally “cut the cord” and made the move to Roku with streaming Discovery Plus and Disney Plus. I gave up on GAC because despite it saturating the broadcast and entertainment media for months with its grandiose plans for new content, it just didn’t deliver much of anything beyond a few nice Christmas movies. I’ve had enough of decades old sitcoms which is all GAC broadcasts now. Enough already.

I know what you mean. It seemed like alot of Christmas movies. Or just the movies in general. Same plot, similar characters, just different actors. It was all too predictable. Then the writing became kinda cheesy. But I still liked the series like Aurora Teagarden.
It takes some time to build movie inventory, don’t worry they’ll get there as they’re still pretty new. They’re picking up great talent so I like the direction of GAC.

They seem to be getting rid of most of their hallmark Mysteries which were the ones I liked to watch.

Saw this one coming… hope we still get some mysteries from her. But knowing her views on LGBTQ I was just waiting for this to drop… will still watch her movies as I find the premise usually enjoyable but it’s probably the biggest loss for Hallmark
I agree. I, too, expected this, sadly. Personally, I’m not seeing harmonious causes or outcomes for these recent moves of Bure and other Hallmark stars. I do respect the decisions of these stars. I just am sad for the potential divisiveness that these moves could lead to.
You are aware that GAC, in their first crop of movies last year, included one that had Rukiya Bernard in the lead role for the first time, right? On Hallmark she was always the black best friend which is something she’d had a problem with for years. Everyone was always badgering the “inclusive” Hallmark to give her the lead and they never did. But “racist” GAC did. And yet somehow GAC is still accused of being this and that. Ridiculous.
Bernard was the lead in Christmas in Evergreen: Bells Are Ringing which premiered in 2020 at Hallmark.
That was an ensemble. In the GAC movie she was the actual leading lady.
After what happen this past weekend with the air of Love, Classified, there were mix feelings for that movie for it had LBQTG in it with 2 ladies..I was waiting for this to happen…so I’m not surprised

Agree. If you paid any attention at all did the regime change at Hallmark you know exactly when this started. There was a same-sex commercial people freaked out the yanked the commercial more people freaked out etc. and this began the fall of Bill Abbott and the rest of the suits that had been with Hallmark for years. I like the changes at Hallmark now there’s more diversity the shows are more creative there’s newer faces acting. You get very bored where the same 5-6 actors are just doing the same roles over and over again. And you never see anyone of color in a lead role they’re always a best friend or behind some counter in some store. Bravo to the new improved Hallmark channel. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out all these actors jumping to GAC and what their political affiliations and beliefs are.

I thought so too. However, the CEO is crown media left because hallmark stopped airing a same sex couple commercial. Then all the actors started to follow. So that confuses me a bit.
You are confused, it is the opposite. The CEO (who is now at GAC) refused to air the commercial in question. The board of Crown Media reversed his decision and he later resigned.

You know what’s really going on? These are early adopters of the Hallmark movies that are leaving. This guy built the Hallmark rom-com movies into what it is today and perhaps they feel a bit of loyalty to him and want him to succeed at his new network so they are willing to bring their talents and their fans to bring some viewers to his new network. What is wrong with that? What is wrong with having a network devoted to nostalgia and traditional Christian values? This isn’t over the air free network channels that need to have diversity to bring in a wide range of audience members for their sponsors. These are paid cable channels that try to find a niche to get viewers. Just like BET that caters to black people, or Univision for Latinos, Bravo for the gay community, etc. Those networks have a target audience and they cater to that audience. If you don’t like that, then watch a channel you do like. Don’t like the cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies but want to watch something seasonal? Then tune into Lifetime where it is a little more diversity or Freeform which airs edgier Christmas movies that aren’t G rated. That is the beauty of cable TV.

Good. Hallmark needs to find new younger actors. The current crop are long in the tooth to continue to play the parts they act.
That actually is what’s happening. I’ve noticed lately they’ve been adding more current and former CW actors in the movies, which makes sense since a lot of the shows film in Vancouver. Her leaving should free up money for them to go after younger actors and now that it’s finally gotten more diverse. They even are making a movie with Lily D. Moore from “Never Have I Ever” and will be the first romcom with a lead actor having Down Syndrome.
Our programs need to reflect daily life. That’s a great start.
They’re also losing the worst actors (Danica McKellar and Candace Cameron Bure may be lovely people, but they’re terrible actors) in their lineup. There may’ve been a time when that’s the best Hallmark could do, but they seem to be popular enough now to score actors who are younger, fresher, and better at reading lines and selling rom coms and mysteries.
I agree. Several of these actors are in their forties playing characters in their thirties and in most cases, they don’t carry it off. It’s very distracting.
YES!! Oh I’m so glad she’s leaving Hallmark, her movies are consistently the worst every year, and I’m so sick of her emceeing the whole Christmas season. A dozen others on the channel are more genuine and better actresses who could do this so much better. I don’t wish her ill- she can go and do her faith channel and I hope it does well. It does seem like there were two types of Hallmark viewers: those that like the faith aspect, and those that like the cheesy romance and want more inclusion of marginalized groups. Without Candace, maybe Hallmark can lean more into the second half and let GAC handle the first half.
I agree with you completely, but it hurts my heart. I’m a devoutly religious person AND a huge supporter of marginalized groups. I think there are many of us out there who could tell you that the two things don’t need to be (and shouldn’t be) mutually exclusive, which is to say that I believe a big tenant of faith HAS to be standing up for people who aren’t as well equipped to stand up for themselves as I might be.
The fact that a lot of people look at faith and see exclusivity and (frankly) bigotry is the fault of people like me, who simply aren’t loud enough to be heard over the current narrative.
I am actually a Christian and even currently getting a Masters degree in theology- believe me, I love my faith, too. I just don’t think it needs to be forced on people, as that can be counter-productive. And unfortunately, many of the stars leaving Hallmark for GAC actively advocate against inclusion (inclusion that is only making Hallmark better and more accessible), so it does seem like it’s necessary to bifurcate, unfortunately.
Please list examples of these “many” actors (be specific) and how they have “actively advocated against inclusion” as you claim. I want actual examples. Not just “well she’s a Christian so…”

Hallmark is going down the drain fast, the ratings for the last month on their new movies have been really low, the new actors that they keep hiring aren’t really interesting, and also, trying to force the main audience of this network, which has always been faith loving conservatives to just accept what this network is changing into, is never going to work, and it’s going to keep showing.

I watch and enjoy both channels. KY biggest complaint is the quality of shows on GAC. It is shown on SD not high Def and picture isn’t sharp. Can they please change to HD like every other network. Makes watching their movies unpleasant
I am still waiting for Verizon to upgrade TCM to HD. Not sure what the decision making process is concerning which networks are broadcast in SD and which are upgraded to HD. Fortunetely most are in HD now.
I also wish GAC would update their website so you could watch their movies live online and also stream it the next day. Just like Hallmark and Lifetime do. It would help their ratings instead of one having to find out whether the movies are being repeated on Amazon Prime or Peacock. Last Christmas half the movies ended up on the former and half on the latter. You never knew where they were going to land.
GAC Family is streaming on Frndly TV where you can record all of their movies. Frndly TV has an app you can download on your smartphone &/or your TV using a Roku device.

When GAC announced they were bringing ‘Fuller House’ to their lineup, I knew it was a matter of time before she moved with them.
Why are people bashing her as if she’s the only one leaving Hallmark?

To steal a favorite term from brilliant conservative scholar Meghan McCain would say, it’s intellectually dishonest to lump a large group of individuals together and then state what “they don’t want.” People are nuanced. Even still, the comments to this article show “they” don’t want bigotry to have a platform and have never said a word about keeping Christians unemployed. I’m confident “they” include a number of Christian individuals who share the beliefs you oppose actually.
I saw that Lacey Chabert supported her to gay friends and went to their wedding! She shows the pictures, so i am assuming she would include them in one of her movies that is made by her. I could be completely wrong!
Who cares about this Pollyanna? Now my beloved Hallmark channels can free up money to allocate to other, far more deserving performers/productions. It’s taken a very long time but Crown Media is finally moving in the right direction – airing more diverse and inclusive programming. I am so weary of this country’s Christo-Fascist and Talibangelical segment trying their upmost to dictate their narrow beliefs to all of society. Most of all, I find it highly amusing that actors such as Bure are fleeing to a network with abysmal ratings that only a certain fringe is watching. Abandoning established Hallmark for a network dependent on ancient reruns? Don’t actors usually want an audience for their projects? Contrast that to the much adored and critically praised film Love Classified broadcast on Hallmark this past weekend. A beautiful premise with new to Crown Media actors and screenwriters. Bravo Hallmark!!

I think eventually these two networks will merge & become one. Hallmark cannot survive without their talent & GAC is not very well known & is not on a lot of cable packages. Either it will merge with Hallmark ala the CW Network or it will become the 4th Hallmark Network. Inclusivity & Diversity maybe on one & not the other. Or they will work it out some other way but either way O don’t think either can survive long without the other especially with the talent going back & forth.
GAC Family. Unfortunately you are probably wrong, the network(s) will likely be successful. As for Hallmark, Hallmark will be fine. Plenty of talented actors that can play the lead in a Hallmark movie and now that Hallmark is more inclusive that should open the door to a larger group of actors willing to do a Hallmark movie.
Hallmrk has the funds to attract new talent. GAC will become like the other networks, counting on old re-runs to survive

I don’t feel any loss for these actors /actresses who decided it’s ok to be prejudiced about others. This GAC is another instance of Christians thinking they are holier than thou.
Are you referring to the same GAC that finally gave Rukiya Bernard the lead role in a romcom instead of having her play the sassy black female friend of the lead like she did for years over on the “enlightened” and “inclusive” Hallmark? The same GAC that gave a multi-picture deal to gay Trevor Donovan?
Trevor Donovan has never publicly come out as gay. Are you outing him just to win an argument? He is very private and does not speak about his sexual orientation, perhaps you shouldn’t either. Trevor has already stated he moved to GAC because he has been given executive producing privileges on his projects there, which is probably why others are leaving HM as well. More power and money is a great motivator.
Can we watch GAC on cable on just streaming. I would be very interested in watching programs on GAC. Thank you.

You can also find it streaming on Philo. I believe it’s available on Spectrum (cable & streaming) but it’s an up charge. When Google Fiber still had TV it was part of my basic cable package.
I’m surprised we’re even hearing about new original content for GAC Family. I thought when they launched they were planning on showing new movies regularly and Christmas movies year-round, but all I’ve seen in their listings recently are sit-com repeats. The last original movie I heard of was the one back in February with Jessica Lowndes and Jesse Metcalfe. At this point they seem more like a nostalgia-themed digital subchannel than an up-and-coming source for original content.
I love Candace Cameron Bure. What a loss for the network. I am even closer to dropping Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. My husband and I greatly miss all of the mysteries they have now cancelled. I miss seeing my favorite actors. I guess it is true that all good things must come to an end.
I called this once the network picked up Full House and Fuller House. It’s crazy to watch everyone leave a network to basically make a clone of that network.

I think all these actors jumping ship from Hallmark to GAC are ungrateful and I for one am very disappointed in them all!

They’re actors. They go where the roles are. For years Hallmark claimed it was a family. Just check out any old episode of Home & Family. Family this. Family that. Bill Abbott was like everyone’s Dad and Michelle Vicary was like everyone’s Mom. Then Bill and then Michelle got ousted and someone new took over and started cancelling shows left and right and for every new face that was introduced to Hallmark, an old face didn’t get a job and so these actors see themselves being phased out. Why shouldn’t they go work for the guy the respect so much and is likely the person responsible to bringing them to Hallmark in the first place. If anyone is “ungrateful” it’s Hallmark for firing Bill and Michelle when it was them that made Hallmark what it was culturally and ratings wise.
Do you have the same opinion of those Hallmark actors who also do the occasional Lifetime movie?
I don’t care about Candace or Hallmark or whatever but every time I see an article or comment about GAC for some reason I think they’re talking about the Ghost Adventures Crew and get excited to see what they’re talking about only to discover its nothing to do with them at all.
