In keeping with its commitment to cinematic creation, CHANEL is proud to announce the launch of the CHANEL & CINEMA – TOKYO LIGHTS mentorship programme. Under the stewardship of movie director and friend of the House Hirokazu Koreeda, a major figure in international cinema awarded multiple times in the world’s most acclaimed festivals, this unique programme aims to support the emergence of a new generation of Japanese directors. On this occasion, a masterclass led by the mentors of the programme, Hirokazu Koreeda, Tilda Swinton, Miwa Nishikawa, Koji Yakusho and Sakura Ando was held in Tokyo to discuss creation, reflect on their career and dive into the specificity of this programme. Born around the same time as cinema, Gabrielle Chanel has supported some of the great directors who influenced the history of the discipline. Today CHANEL continues adhering to the pioneering vision and commitment of its founder, by creating costumes for films and collaborating with the world’s most renowned directors, institutions and festivals. By travelling to Hangzhou, China, to present its 2024/25 Métiers d'art collection, the House is exploring an essential component of Gabrielle Chanel’s imagination: the Chinese lacquer screens that inspired her all her life, and that still adorn the walls of her apartment at 31, rue Cambon in Paris. The one in her office depicts the city of Hangzhou and its legendary lake. In a film starring House ambassadors Tilda Swinton and Xin Zhilei, and newly appointed House ambassador Leah Dou, director Wim Wenders imagines a contemporary and poetic journey through the Coromandel screens so dear to Gabrielle Chanel. Since 2002, each CHANEL Métiers d'art collection celebrates the savoir-faire of the Maisons d’art at 𝘭𝘦19M, bringing together embroiderers, feather workers, paruriers, goldsmiths, pleaters, shoemakers, hatters and milliners, and bearing witness to the historic commitment of CHANEL to this exceptional craft heritage. The film of the show will be revealed on Tuesday, December 3rd 2024 at 2pm, Paris time.
