I just heard a great talk from Jo Plaete of Metaphysic on how they de-aged Tom Hanks and Robin Wright for Robert Zemeckis’ latest film Here, entirely using neural networks. They even had a real-time preview on set, enabling the director and actors to craft their performances live. In #postproduction, they introduced what he called neural animators, who could tweak the results without the need to retrain the #neuralnetwork. To bring this vision to life, the brand Still G.I.N collaborated with creative agency Rosewood Creative, acclaimed director Dave Meyers, and entertainment-focused generative AI company Metaphysic.ai. The result is a “what if?” meeting that cinematically bridges past, present and future generations of superstars. Critically, we worked in close partnership with the Sinatra and Davis estates to ensure a faithful representation that honors how Frank and Sammy would have carried themselves.

🎬 Another milestone moment for Metaphysic.ai: "Here" has finally hit theaters - a journey that began with a small startup team in Summer 2022 and pushed a big part of our technological innovation to date. Working with visionary filmmakers Bob Zemeckis and Kevin Baillie, we took on what seemed impossible: creating nearly an hour of photorealistic de-aged human faces across multiple ages, delivering emotionally charged performances. What started as a carefully considered leap of faith turned into a new industry benchmark for one of VFX's greatest challenges - the human face. One of the transformational elements and keys to success was providing real-time de-aging technology that allowed actors Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Paul Bettany, and Kelly Reilly to see and adjust their performances as their younger selves on set - a first in film history. Their enthusiasm and public praise for the tool has been incredibly validating. This project is a testament to how AI, well integrated into the VFX pipeline and put in the hands of great artists, can serve as a powerful tool in the filmmaking process, unlocking creative possibilities and enabling filmmakers to tell stories in ways that were previously out of reach.
