The Copper Family, Sussex’s folk singing dynasty, are celebrated in a new exhibition at Sussex Library in partnership with Sussex Retold, a project led by Margaretta Jolly with the support of Sam Carroll, which explores the histories, heritage and landscapes of the Sussex regions. The free exhibition runs until 28 April 2025, helping to tell a land-working and singing history of Rottingdean and Sussex Downland, using material from the Copper Archive at The Keep. We just had the privilege of attending the In Conversation event with Clive Myrie and Sasha Roseneil Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts. Clive’s reflections on his career—from his first posting in Japan visiting a leprosy colony, through to last week's dispatches from Jerusalem—highlight the role of journalism in shaping public narratives. His work continues to document major events and offer deeply human perspectives on global issues. For us at Sussex, this event was part of The Big Read, a key initiative that brings the university community together through shared reading experiences. It’s an incredible reminder of the vital role libraries play in fostering dialogue, reflection, and learning. Featuring Clive’s book 'Everything Is Everything', The Big Read makes space for critical conversations on modern journalism. This initiative has been invaluable for students and staff, offering new perspectives and a collective sense of connection. For libraries looking to engage the student body in a meaningful way, initiatives like this are a powerful way to bring users in, engage critical thinking, and share stories. #AcademicLibraries #CommunityEngagement #SussexBigRead #HigherEd

At the Open Press at the University of Sussex (OPUS), we’re continually exploring how open-access resources can foster deeper connections across the educational landscape. The release of five new chapters of one of our titles, Creating with Uncertainty: Sustainability Education Resources for a Changing World, aligns with this goal. By offering new and timely content, including chapters on menstrual health, nature conservation, the commons, gifting, and global agreements, this resource not only provides schools and other educators with adaptable tools for sustainability education but also demonstrates how open publishing can amplify collaborative, interdisciplinary work. This project is an example of how OPUS supports innovative teaching practices while expanding our platform to engage with broader communities. As we continue to grow, projects like Creating with Uncertainty reinforce the impact and importance of open-access publications in making vital educational resources widely available. We’re proud to help sustain these conversations, especially at a time when environmental education and planetary justice are more crucial than ever. We have exciting news! The new Division of Library, Culture and Heritage (DLCH) was formed on 1 September, bringing together The Keep, Sussex Library, and the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts (ACCA). This innovative Division will enhance Sussex's cultural, educational, and research offerings, while aligning with the University’s Sussex 2035 strategy. Vice-Chancellor Professor Sasha Roseneil shared that DLCH will "power and invigorate the cultural dimension" of Sussex’s future, strengthening ties across the arts, heritage, and community. Jane Harvell, Director of Library, Cultural and Heritage Services, emphasized the importance of this new collaboration, saying it will enable fresh thinking, broaden public engagement, and showcase Sussex’s rich cultural assets. As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Sussex Library, this new Division represents an exciting opportunity to continue building on our heritage and expanding our impact across campus and beyond. #HigherEducation #UniversityofSussex #CulturalHeritage #LibraryServices #ResearchAndInnovation #CommunityEngagement
