"A trade group in the waste diversion and conversion technology sector, the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) also quickly issued its congratulations to the party and says it “welcomes the new government’s emphasis on tackling climate change through rapid growth of renewables.” ADBA says the Labour Party’s plan includes key climate goals that can be met best through “green gas” expansion. Anaerobic digestion (AD) technology is used to convert collected agricultural and livestock waste, food scraps, yard waste and other discarded materials into a biogas that can be used in several applications. “The key now is delivery; green gas can and should grow faster than wind, and second only to solar according to International Energy Agency projections,” says Chris Huhne, chair of ADBA. “We can build hundreds of new green gas plants by the time of the next election.” Continues Huhne, “Energy from home-grown green gas will overtake energy from nuclear by 2029 on current trends. If we are headed for exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming , with 2.7 degrees the current trend target, and the actions of the COP's not reducing overall emissions , then the importance of the UK's National Adaptation Programme to Climate Change (NAP3) becomes even more important. Yet the review of the current programme by the Climate Change Committee in March this year , said that it a) falls short of what we need b) the current approach is not working c) an urgent review of NAP 3 is needed now Its worth a read .. we do need to prepare ourselves better - and sooner .. https://lnkd.in/eTB9krCE

Working with Future Water and BMG Research on our latest report on public attitudes to #water has been fascinating. Water is a complex subject. Despite the media attention for years, public understanding of how the sector works and how water gets to and from homes and businesses is low. Public understanding around the role we all need to play in conserving water is not high enough. This isn't the public's fault. We all need to double down on helping the public understand the UK's water story. And this includes the strategic industrial benefit the sector brings - skills, R&D, jobs and environmental benefits to name a few points. AMP8 will be based on plans to address some of the challenges we face in the UK. However, for AMP8 to be successful, we need to bring communities and society with us. Today's report tests the water on where public understanding is. It gives us a benchmark to start from and where industry needs to help. As we all continue to double down on our efforts to invest in reducing GHG emissions – this is a timely and welcome publication by Oxford Net Zero and BSI (an update to their earlier research) which assesses 37 (!!!!) voluntary resources used internationally (by non-state players) to guide net zero action. Great to see strengthened convergence amongst various tools and resources so we’re slowly all getting on the same page – but still so many gaps! So many areas could benefit from greater alignment!! Finally - #greenwashing regulation! I was more than happy to share my views with Bloomberg, Edie, International adviser and others. In essence, fact based communication is good. Great even. No more just sounding sustainable, but more focus on the actual impact. The new rules force companies to make evidence-based product labels that clearly explain to consumers what their money is being used for. Just imaging all the court cases we could avoid by clearly communicating how and why and what a sustainable product/service is. Let's do that. https://lnkd.in/dRxe2NFq

An engaging and thought provoking panel at Recycling Expo with Thalia Waste Management’s own Sarah Moyo and Dimitra Rappou, Helen Jordan and Nick Kirk. Manufacturers, recyclers and the waste sector share the vision to improve circularity and decarbonise waste. The panelists agreed it’s time for revolution and that revolution requires strong leadership from a government about to re-write the rules on recycling. We can’t afford to get it wrong. At Thalia Waste Management we share the ambition and the responsibility and we agree that certainty, clarity and enforcement of new regulation will help us deliver a step change in accelerating the U.K.’s transition to net-zero.

the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero published a hugely important document today. a consultation that could be a key element in driving decarbonisation of the waste you and I make every day. some key thoughts. 1. measuring emissions and allocating them to customers so that there are the right signals to get fossil carbon out the the waste stream is critical. the consultation asks important questions here and it's complex. it's also at the heart of what will make a successful policy 2. interaction with wider policies will determine if this works. we need to get waste out of landfill. we need to work to end waste export and we need to reduce waste by better design and make products far more recyclable. emissions trading can support all of these but they have to work together. emissions trading alone could increase emissions by driving up landfill!! 3. we need to think carefully about how we reduce and decarbonise non recycled waste. carbon capture is the only real scale option available and has the potential to deliver negative emissions. driving carbon capture is an essential part of the puzzle. there is lots more but that is a start. finally genuinely congratulations to the team in Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Jay Shah Georgina Tracey Jamie Pinkerton Connor Mckitrick and Rachel Nevins you all did a super job in getting your head around this sector.

💡 New report from the Energy Crisis Commission from Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit out today says the UK is "at risk of experiencing a repeat of the sharp increase in energy costs because it relies too heavily on gas" 'https://lnkd.in/eRsiyFYv 👍 The Commission has some key recommendations, including ➡ rollout of energy efficiency measures, such as insulation ➡ tougher efficiency standards in the private rental market, to help improve the UK’s draughty homes ➡ a plan to move homes away from gas heating by rolling out more heat pumps or other low-carbon alternatives Here's the great news: these policies are really well supported by people across the UK. Recent Climate Outreach research has found people love renewable energy and want more of it And, when we asked people across the UK what they wanted the Govt to prioritise insulation measures were top.

Here are some key takeaways that you might find intriguing: - A significant hurdle impeding progress for companies is the gap between current climate targets and the necessary policy frameworks and incentives to facilitate the transition. - Existing global policies are steering us towards a temperature rise closer to 2.7°C rather than the desired 1.5°C. - Companies need to actively advocate for ambitious climate policy-making, as lobbying and broader corporate influence face heightened scrutiny, particularly in the realm of Responsible Policy Engagement (RPE). - The focus on RPE is swiftly evolving into a realm of both risk and opportunity for businesses. - This theme of RPE is intricately tied to transition plans and aligns well with emerging disclosure requirements, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). - Prioritizing investor perspectives has become paramount for boards, with 'climate lobbying' emerging as a prevalent topic in AGM shareholder resolutions. - There is a growing consensus that RPE falls under the purview of boards as a key responsibility, necessitating a strategic approach whch is within the board's domain. Check out this excellent video where Piers Forster and team explain the latest Climate Change Committee progress report findings just released - spoiler alert it is not all positive! The 10 priority actions for the remainder of this year needed to make up lost ground: ▶ Make electricity cheaper. Removing policy costs from electricity prices will support industrial electrification and ensure the lower running costs of heat pumps compared to fossil-fuel boilers are reflected in household bills. ▶ Reverse recent policy rollbacks. Remove the exemption of 20% of households from the 2035 fossil-fuel boiler installation phase-out, address the gap left by removing obligations on landlords to improve the energy efficiency of rented homes and reinstate the 2030 phase-out of new fossil-fuel car and van sales. The damage of these rollbacks can be limited by quickly reinstating these policies. ▶ Remove planning barriers for heat pumps, electric vehicle charge points and onshore wind. ▶ Introduce a comprehensive programme for decarbonisation of public sector buildings. ▶ Effectively design and implement the upcoming renewable energy CfD auctions. Ensure funding and auction design for the Sixth and Seventh Allocation Rounds are appropriate to deliver at least 50 GW of offshore wind by 2030. ▶ Accelerate electrification of industrial heat. Strengthen the UK Emissions Trading Scheme to ensure that its price is sufficient to incentivise decarbonisation and that support is available for a rapid transition to electric heat across much of industry. ▶ Ramp up tree planting and peatland restoration. Tree planting must be scaled up in the 2020s for abatement to be sufficient for later carbon budgets and Net Zero. There must be no more delays to addressing the barriers to delivery. ▶ Finalise business models for large-scale deployment of engineered removals. Finalise and open to the market the business models for engineered removals. ▶ Publish a strategy to support skills. Support workers in sectors which need to grow or transition and in communities that may be adversely impacted. ▶ Strengthen NAP3 with a vision that sets clear objectives and targets and reorganise government adaptation policy. “For CSOs, it means keeping up with an alphabet soup of regulatory requirements, understanding what type of reporting is required where, and when it will come into play.” As a leader in the sustainability sector, I've observed a significant shift in our focus. What once was primarily about implementing sustainable practices has now evolved to emphasize reporting these efforts. Today, sustainability professionals are dedicating much of their time to ESG reporting. This shift raises an important question: Are we allocating enough time to actually doing the critical work itself?
