In 2024, we saw unprecedented innovation at the intersection of AI and video. OpenAI introduced Sora, its groundbreaking text-to-video generator. And a number of companies — Vimeo included — rolled out new AI video features to streamline workflows for businesses and individual creators.
But these new technologies also brought growing pains, particularly as companies navigate their responsibilities with regard to data privacy. Adobe got into hot water when users interpreted a change to the company’s terms of service to mean their work could be used to train the company’s generative AI model.
For our part, Vimeo CEO Philip Moyer made our position clear: Vimeo will not allow generative AI models to be trained using videos hosted on our platform without the explicit consent of the video owner, even if they’re using our free offerings.
But while individuals and organizations alike are determining how and where to adopt AI video tools, it’s undeniable that the technology is moving forward quickly. In this blog, we’ll take a look at some of the most significant developments in AI and video in 2024, and we’ll look ahead to how these technologies will change workflows in the future.
AI-generated video details
For organizations, video strategy isn’t just a matter of the videos themselves. Every asset requires titles, metadata tags, chapters, and summaries. These details previously represented one of the most time-consuming aspects of video creation.
The arrival of generative AI has allowed platforms like Vimeo to automate these repetitive tasks and save meaningful time that can now be spent on higher-value creative work. With Vimeo AI, users can now automatically generate titles, tags, chapters, and video text summaries — all in a matter of seconds.
AI editing and productivity
Perhaps the most impactful AI feature for video is text-based video editing. Consider a short video in which a person is speaking to the camera: previously, a user would have to manually remove every false start and misstep, every “um” and “ah.” With text-based video editing, a user can simply remove those “ums” and “ahs” from the written transcript, and AI will automatically remove those missteps from the video itself.
AI editing is having a dramatic effect on productivity. For Ivanti, an enterprise-level IT and security provider, Vimeo’s AI tools have reduced their video production time by 80%.
“In the past, we would edit videos using another software platform, typically Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve, and then upload the video to Vimeo for review, and then again make edits within the other software. Now we're able to just do that all within Vimeo and don't have to reupload and replace.”
AI translation and dubbing
Before the rise of AI, businesses had to make difficult decisions when it came to translating and localizing video assets. Translating a video often required an expensive outside agency, and organizations had to choose which regions warranted the investment.
The arrival of AI translation and dubbing means that businesses no longer have to choose which videos merit localization and which regions are most important. Instead, they can now translate videos into dozens of languages in just a few minutes. For companies like Axalta, that capability is opening up new opportunities for global expansion.
“Vimeo's AI capabilities, particularly around translation and accessibility, will be instrumental in our global expansion efforts. We'll be able to reach new markets and customers without sacrificing the quality or effectiveness of our training content."
Interactive AI features
While the previous three features we mentioned have to do with productivity, this last breakthrough fundamentally changes the way users engage with video content. New interactive AI features allow viewers to ask questions directly within the video player, with the AI feature providing the answer. AI tools can also automatically condense long videos into short, shareable summaries that address specific points requested by the viewer.
These new features are powering key breakthroughs for employee training and L&D. By allowing employees to engage directly with each video, businesses can provide more personalized training experiences. Ask AI ensures that each employee finds the information they need for their role.
What’s next?
As we move into 2025, businesses and creators will expand their use of AI to streamline video workflows and improve user experiences. AI features continue to develop, and we should expect new breakthroughs in the months and years to come.
