How you can help

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions, but for legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later."

You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here. You can also leave a message on my talk page.--PMDrive1061 (talk) 03:28, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of topic ban

Per the consensus here, I have enacted a topic ban wherein you are not allowed to apply maintenance tags to any articles or drafts. Note, this applies to all tags and not just your list nor the shortcuts. Any violation of this topic ban will lead to escalating blocks so I advise you to edit with caution. Star Mississippi 21:47, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Star Mississippi:, I shall do everything that I can to comply with the topic ban set forth. Cryptic has provided guidance [here] to assist me in determining which templates I should or should not use. --Jax 0677 (talk) 21:59, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Star Mississippi:, I just got a message from Andy Dingley. Am I allowed to discuss the addition of templates on a talk page? --Jax 0677 (talk) 22:17, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Belated, but I agree with @Floquenbeam here and the advice @Cryptic gave you as well as @Andy Dingley's first point: don't. While I wouldn't block you for discussing, it's a grey area where an admin wouldn't be wrong to do so if they thought you were using the Talk to get another editor to act as your proxy. Go work in another area entirely for a while, then try to learn where the disconnect is with your tagging and the community's views and then maybe consider requesting the ban be lifted. • In case you're interested in drive-by feedback, Jax, I would strongly suggest not discussing adding templates on an article talk page. Even if technically, you're allowed to. It just brings you closer to the cliff edge. Just let it go, I'd suggest. Let article maintenance be someone else's problem for a long while, to prove to everyone you are not hyper-focused on the subject and might, eventually, be allowed to get involved again someday. Floquenbeam (talk) 23:09, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you! --Jax 0677 (talk) 23:11, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Would adding an "about" hatnote to Gunsmoke (album) to direct readers to Texas Hippie Coalition's similarly named upcoming album or "dab" to a disambiguation page such as Diwakar (disambiguation) be OK? Also, am I permitted to convert bare URLs into properly formatted references or initiate move requests? Part of me is afraid that writing out the contents of a template might not be prudent. --Jax 0677 (talk) 23:13, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Star Mississippi:, would I be allowed to use the "reflist" template? --Jax 0677 (talk) 13:28, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oops missed your prior. Not sure about the dab, but reflist is OK as that's a clear improvement. You've done the work and aren't asking someone else to. Star Mississippi 18:13, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What about hat notes, converting bare urls and move requests? --Jax 0677 (talk) 20:17, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd stay away from the latter two as you're telling others to do a certain thing. It's not 100% a no, but grey enough area that it could be disruptive. Star Mississippi 00:06, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, for now, per your advice, I will post bare urls between "ref" tags and allow others to convert them to proper citations, like I did with Wake Up the Wicked. --Jax 0677 (talk) 14:06, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No. sorry I thought you meant you would convert them. If you're just going to leave them partially done, I think that's an issue with the topic ban. Either fully convert them to a reference (and there's no reason not to with the scripts that take the URL and do it) or don't touch them at all. Star Mississippi 15:18, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My plan is to add the URL between the "ref" tags, then convert them to proper citations when I am at logged on to Wikipedia via an actual conputer. I was afraid that "citeweb" might be considered a maintenance template. Thanks. --Jax 0677 (talk) 16:01, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, citeweb/news/journal/etc. is the actual completion of the edit. Putting it between ref tags is not an improvement over a bare URL. Just leave it as is until you get to a computer. Star Mississippi 16:07, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is my using {{histmerge}} to connect the histories of Rajput (surname) and Rajput (disambiguation) permissible? --Jax 0677 (talk) 13:30, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, you're still requesting someone to do work on your behalf. If you cannot complete the task, please do not add a template (it doesn't matter which) Star Mississippi 14:53, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks (only administrators can perform history merges, so I assume that we shall leave that be)! --Jax 0677 (talk) 14:55, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, but a recent edit of yours to the page Patrick Kennison has an edit summary that appears to be inadequate, inaccurate, or inappropriate. The summaries are helpful to people browsing an article's history, so it is important that you use edit summaries that accurately tell other editors what you did. Feel free to use the sandbox to make test edits. Pasting a whole citation in place of an edit summary is not helpful. Please consider using better summaries. @Eric:, sorry about that. --Jax 0677 (talk) 00:05, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
