As in Ladysmith so withBullers relieving force, the Navy and their heavyguns were a tower of strength, and figured inevery action from Colenso onwards. To thereUeving force the Royal Navy contributed 39officers and 403 men, and this contingent waslater augmented by 2 officers and 50 men of theNatal Naval Volunteers, and the artillery theywere able to bring into action comprised one6-inch and two 47-iiich on travelling carriages,two 4•7-inch on platform mountings, one 4*7-inchon a railway truck, and 18 long 12-pounders ontravelling carriages. The following figures affordstriking proof of the splendid work done by thatportion of the Royal Navy that came actually intothe first fighting line during the Boer War.
