Amanda Seyfried was long a fan favorite to play Glinda in the Wicked movie. Now she’s opening up about not getting the role — and that video of her singing one of the film’s most iconic songs.

The Mamma Mia star spoke to People at the Make It Cute x Babylist Holiday Event in Beverly Hills this week about a January 2023 Instagram video that stylist Elizabeth Stewart posted of her singing “Popular” while wearing a fluffy white gown. Some people speculated that Seyfried was campaigning for the role with the posting of the video, even though Ariana Grande was already announced to have the part.

Now, Seyfried said that while the video was posted after Grande’s casting, it was filmed before she auditioned for Wicked during a shoot for Lancôme.

“I was not auditioning for Wicked yet, but I knew it was like coming up,” Seyfried, who also starred in the movie musical Les Miserables, told the magazine. “So I was just f***ing around really, and I was like, ‘This dress is so Glinda.’ And Elizabeth was like, ‘Do it.’ And then she posted at some point.”

While that video was not an official audition, Seyfried said that she did want the part of the so-called good witch in the long-awaited adaptation.

“I went hard for that, for sure,” Seyfried, who is next starring in the thriller The Housemaid opposite Sydney Sweeney, shared. “And it was a very long process. And everything happens the way it's meant to.”

Wicked currently leads the Golden Globes nominations, with Grande scoring a nod for Best Supporting Actress.

Seyfried wasn’t the only Hollywood star to audition for the role of Glinda. Dove Cameron, who starred in the Disney Channel musical franchise Descendants, confirmed to TheWrap that she auditioned for the role, telling the outlet that it was a “long process.”

“I’m so excited for Ariana. She’s a genuinely dear friend of mine. We met when we were super young. I think she’s gonna kill it,” Cameron said back in 2023. “I think the whole cast is phenomenal head to toe. So, like, as a fan, I’m really, really excited to see it.”
