Update on Dachshund Mix Saved From Euthanasia Last at Last Minute by Dog Sitter Has Everyone in Tears

Dog sitting can be a fun way to make some extra cash while spending time with adorable dogs. Whether it's an after-work gig or a full-time endeavor, caring for dogs is both rewarding and educational. While you're hanging out with furry friends, you'll also be learning how to best take care of them!

Sometimes, though, a dog-sitting gig is more than meets the eye. On December 11, Rover walker and sitter Ava learned this firsthand after receiving an unusual request through the app. It came from a dog rescue that needed help finding a place for a shelter dog to stay. Racing against the clock (and Los Angeles traffic), Ava and the rescue pulled him from the euthanasia list with only minutes to spare.

What an incredible day! Ava and Fur Love Haven were able to save the life of this resilient little dog just in the nick of time. Boogie seemed eager to leave the animal shelter, but he was even more eager to get up close and personal with his new rescuer. If he could've been in her lap during the car ride home, he would have!

"Those eyes!" gushed @gramhamcam. "He knows exactly what you did for him." I think you're right! This Dachshund mix's expressive little face shows every bit of joy or concern, and he seems to be taking in every moment in his new foster home. He may only be with Ava for a handful of days, but it's clear that these days are already changing his life.

Aww! Boogie has already begun his epic transformation under Ava's care, and just a few days have made a world of difference. He looked so much more comfortable after his bath! The boogers on his nose that inspired his name were gently wiped away, and he enjoyed resting on the patio and on someone's lap instead of in a kennel.

Fostering Rescue Dogs

As stories like this remind us, there can be a lot more to the dog rescue process than simply visiting the shelter and bringing a new pal home. Dog rescues often need the help of temporary fosters like Ava to give shelter dogs a place to spend the night, especially for last-minute, emergency rescues.

It can be impossible to know what to expect from a foster dog before meeting them, but it can take several days or even weeks before they feel at home. A dog's foster parent shouldn't be as concerned about obedience training and long-term plans, but they should do all they can to ensure that a rescue dog begins to make progress and build confidence.
