The 20 best gifts to give someone you don't know very well

Perhaps you need a gift for your child's teacher, or an unexpected plus-one shows up for dinner, or a family friend swings by for a visit. No matter the reason, it's useful for one to have spare gifts on hand to give out, just in case. My mom, for example, always purchases Bath & Body Works items and large sized Yankee Candles in bulk and keeps them in a box in her closet, ready to give out just in case she needs spare gifts to give on short notice. And the hack has saved her more than few times over the years when she's needed a last-minute gift to give a cousin's new partner or a neighbor who surprised her with a gift.

Over the years, I've thought a lot about this little spare gift habit of hers and how genius it is. I think what I love most about it is that her gifts follow a few golden rules for giving a gift to someone you don't know very well: They're inexpensive, they don't require knowing someone's size, they're inoffensive and they're consumable, meaning they're gifts that can be used up and tossed away, without having to add more clutter to one's life.

And so, with Christmas merely days aways, I think it's time we all took a page out of my mom's book. So with that, I've curated a handful of inexpensive gifts you can give just about anyone who might show up Christmas Day. (And yes, Yankee candles and Bath & Body Works body washes do make an appearance, because of course they do!). At the end of the day, it's the thought that counts, right?

The best hack for buying Yankee Candles in bulk is to go straight to the source, via the Yankee Candle Outlet, that is. You'll find lots of top scents for half-price, like this "Woodland Weekend Memories" candle that smells like autumn, with notes of soft amber, fall fruits, and creamy coconut milk.

Ditch the cliché hot sauce and reach for something sweeter this time. Mike’s Hot Honey is sweet, but not too sweet, with a touch of heat. Drizzle it on pepperoni pizza for a tasty, sweet and spicy combo, or squeeze just a touch on Brussels sprouts before roasting them to crispy perfection.

The beauty of smart plugs isn’t inherently making things compatible with voice control like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Really, it’s about making regular things in your home easier to use, and who doesn't want that? These can be used to automatically turn on, say, your standing fan or your space heater — and it fits perfectly in a stocking or small gift bag.

We all could do with fewer shopping bags, which is why Baggu's colorful and fun reusable tote bags are a brilliant gift idea. They're made of waterproof and durable nylon, perfect for toting groceries home in. Choose from other patterns like Night Sky or Gingham, though we're fans of these bright and bold Still Life designs. Because it's a set of three you can split them among giftees, too.

It's the chocolate that ruined all other chocolate for me. Venchi's Pistachio Cremino bar is made with alternating layers of that creamy gianduja (an Italian creation of chocolate with about 30% hazelnut paste) and delicate, lightly salted pistachio cream spread — a truly Italian flavor.

Produced by Fly By Jing and made in Chengdu, the Sichuan Chili Crisp hot sauce stands out for its bold, spicy flavoring that falls just short of being unreasonably hot. Sure, you can probably pick up some flaky Maldon sea salt from the grocery store, but this smoked variety can be a bit trickier to find. The salt is gently smoked over oak to give it a robust, thick flavor that reminds one of good American barbeque. While it can be used to punch up pretty much any dish, it’s also delicious, simply sprinkled on a thick slice of sourdough with unsalted melted butter.
