About AAA Car Insurance
AAA sells auto insurance nationwide. There is a federation of 32 motor clubs and more than 1,000 branch offices in North America.
Founded in 1902, AAA or “Triple A” is a not-for-profit membership organization that provides automotive, travel and insurance services to millions of members across the United States and Canada. AAA car insurance is available to both AAA members and non-members, depending on your state.
AAA has extra benefits that can be helpful in case of an emergency. For example, AAA members can get discounts on hotel stays, rental cars and other travel expenses. They also have access to a 24-hour roadside assistance service. This can be a lifesaver if you have a flat tire or need help jump-starting your car.

AAA Car Insurance
Here’s a look at the core coverage types you can buy through AAA car insurance:
Liability Car Insurance
Liability car insurance covers accidental injuries and property damage to others if you cause a car accident. It also pays for your legal costs, judgments and settlements if you are sued because of an accident. In most states, drivers are required to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance.
Comprehensive Insurance
Comprehensive insurance pays to repair or replace your car if it’s damaged due to problems like fires, floods, severe weather, vandalism, theft, falling objects and collisions with animals. The maximum payout for comprehensive insurance is the actual cash value of your vehicle if it is totaled, minus your deductible.
Collision Insurance
Collision insurance pays to repair or replace your car after an accident, no matter who is at fault. It also covers accidents with stationary objects, like a guardrail or telephone pole. The maximum payout for collision insurance is the actual cash value of your vehicle if it’s totaled, minus your deductible.
Collision and comprehensive insurance are optional coverage types that are usually sold together. If you have a lease or loan, you’ll likely be required to have both.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance
In some states, uninsured motorist coverage is required, and it’s optional in other states. If a driver crashes into you and they don’t have insurance or don’t have enough insurance to cover your losses in full, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage will provide additional coverage for you and your passengers’ injuries. In some states, you can buy coverage for damage to your car caused by an uninsured driver.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Personal injury protection (PIP) is a required coverage in no-fault states. PIP pays for your medical bills if you get hurt in an accident, no matter who is at fault. It also extends coverage to passengers riding in your car who are also injured. If you live in a fault state, PIP is often available as an endorsement for extra protection.
Medical Payments Insurance
Medical payments insurance (MedPay) pays for your medical bills if you, a family member or a passenger in your car gets injured in an accident. It covers expenses such as ambulance rides, X-rays, surgery, prescription medication and rehabilitation.

Here’s how three AAA auto insurance companies stack up to competitors’ complaint levels. MemberSelect Insurance Co., Interinsurance Exchange and CSAA Insurance Exchange all have a lower-than-average complaint level compared to many other car insurance companies, based on complaints made to state insurance departments across the country.
AAA’s Grade from Collision Repair Professionals
The opinions of collision repair professionals are useful because they see how insurance companies compare in the claims process. Does AAA offer Accident Forgiveness?
Yes, most of its regional AAA insurers AAA offer accident forgiveness, but availability varies.
Accident forgiveness prevents your rates from increasing at renewal time after you cause an accident. Generally, accident forgiveness has limitations, such as forgiving one accident per policy (not one accident per driver). Make sure you ask your AAA club what specific rules apply for accident forgiveness.
If accident forgiveness is available, it may be provided as a complimentary benefit or you may be able to purchase it as an add-on. For instance, AAA’s Auto Club South members get automatic accident forgiveness if they’ve been claim free for five years. Or you can purchase accident forgiveness as an add-on for instant coverage.
Does AAA Offer New Car Replacement?
Yes, AAA does offer a form of new car replacement insurance, depending on your regional AAA insurer. This type of insurance typically pays to buy a brand-new car of a similar make and model instead of the depreciated value of your vehicle if it is totaled due to a problem covered by your policy, such as a car accident or flood.
For example, Auto Club South offers “enhanced total loss replacement” as an optional coverage. If you purchase a new car and it is totaled within two years of the purchase date, has less than 24,000 miles, and is not totaled due to fire, flood, larceny or theft, Auto Club South will pay to replace your totaled car with a new car of the same make and model.
Does AAA Offer Gap Insurance?
Yes, some AAA regional insurers have optional gap insurance that might be worthwhile if you’re “under water” on your vehicle and owe more than it’s worth.
If your car is totaled due to a problem covered by your policy (like a fire or accident), gap insurance can help cover the gap between what your insurance company pays and what you still owe on your car.
Does AAA Offer a Diminishing Deductible?
Yes, AAA has a diminishing deductible. With this feature, your comprehensive and collision insurance deductible drops by a certain amount for each policy term you do not file an insurance claim. For instance, with the disappearing deductible through AAA Auto Club South, your deductible will decrease by $50 for each car on your policy for each policy term you don’t make a claim. The max discount is $500.
AAA’s “disappearing deductible” might only be available with certain policies, according to the insurer’s rules. For example, the disappearing deductible is available to Ultimate Plan members of AAA Auto Club South.
Does AAA Offer SR-22s?
AAA will provide SR-22s. These are Certificates of Financial Responsibility required by some states if you’re labeled a “high risk” driver.
However, SR-22 availability may vary by AAA regional club—and approval depends on the severity of your driving record. You may also need to be a AAA member to qualify for one.
Does AAA Offer Usage-Based Insurance?
Yes, AAADrive is a usage-based insurance program. It monitors five factors and calculates a driving score:
- Fatigue. How long you drive your car without taking a break.
- Mobile phone distraction. Interactions you have with your phone while driving.
- Smooth driving. Your anticipation of road hazards and how you manage your speed.
- Speed. Your rate of speed while driving compared to others on the road.
- Time of day. A review of the time periods that you drive.
There are a few ways you can save with AAADrive:
- Get up to 5% off premiums for enrolling.
- Receive up to 10% off premiums when everyone on your policy enrolls.
- Qualify for up to 30% off premiums at policy renewal (based on your driving score).
AAA recommends AAADrive if you have teens or seniors on your policy. You can set up parameters for these individuals and get alerted when they’re exceeded. These parameters could include speed, time of day or location.
Does AAA Offer Pay-Per-Mile Insurance?
AAA doesn’t have pay-per-mile insurance. With pay-per-mile insurance, you’ll typically pay a monthly or daily base rate and a per-mile rate. This insurance type can be a good fit for low-mileage drivers.

AAA Partners With Hyundai To Insure Cars Targeted by Thieves
Hyundai car models lacking push-button starts and immobilizing anti-theft devices have been the target of thieves nationwide after a viral Tik Tok video revealed an easy method to steal them. That has left some Hyundai owners in a bind because certain top insurers, such as Progressive and State Farm, have been refusing to sell car insurance for these Hyundai models.
AAA has stepped in to offer relief by teaming up with Hyundai to offer new and renewal car insurance policies to affected Hyundai owners, according to an announcement by Hyundai. Hyundai drivers seeking auto insurance can contact AAA for a rate quote. This car insurance program is available in all states except Alaska, Massachusetts and Washington.
Hyundai (and Kia, which experienced a similar problem with some car models), have developed a software solution to bolster the vehicles’ anti-theft features, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
