Xfinity Home offers two installation options for its security systems: professional or self-installation. Professional installation costs $60 to $100. It is mandatory for motion sensors, door/window sensors, and smoke detectors. However, Xfinity allows customers to self-install other devices, including indoor, outdoor and doorbell cameras, at no extra charge for a professional setup.
Choosing professional installation grants you a comprehensive home assessment by an Xfinity expert. The expert will tailor recommendations to your specific security needs and home configuration. The installer will also guide you through using your Xfinity Home system.
Setup for Two Coverage Scenarios
We decided to shop for two different home security systems: One would provide coverage for a small 900-square-foot house and the other for a larger 4,000-square-foot house.
Small Bungalow
House one is a small bungalow measuring 900 square feet. It has a front and back door. We chose the Base system for this home for $360 upfront or $15 per month for 24 months. The system included the Xfinity home app with simple home control, one touch-screen controller, three door/window sensors, one pet-friendly motion sensor, battery and cellular system backup and the Xfinity Home Security yard sign.
Large Colonial
House two needed more protection for a much larger home, so we chose the Ultimate Home System which costs $600 or $25 per month for 24 months. The system came with the following components.
- Xfinity Home app and simple home control
- One touchscreen controller
- 10 door/window sensors
- Two HD indoor/outdoor cameras
- One wireless keypad
- A pet-friendly motion sensor

On the website, Xfinity placed its two monitoring service options front and center but initially did not provide information about equipment pricing.
The website provided the logos of Xfinity’s partners for locks, lighting and thermostats to show product compatibility.
After starting to shop, we put in an address and were shown pricing for Home Pro Protection Plus plan only. The LiveChat feature also popped up.
Once we selected the only monitoring option served to us, we moved on to the next screen where we could purchase equipment packages. It was here where we were shown pricing, but only broken down in monthly payments.
From there, we were given the cost for installation (ours was $60 but other sources put the cost at $100 so this may vary) as well as times available for a professional to install the system.
Overall, the process was fairly simple, but we were disappointed to see that the self-monitoring options weren’t served to us (at least at the locations we tested).
Resources
Xfinity didn’t offer much helpful resources. The company did have a few small tips about camera placement and a couple of live video shots of a property indoors and outside. However, we saw no blog, home security FAQs or information about how to choose a home security system.
What We Like About Xfinity Home Security
We like the fact that Xfinity doesn’t require a term contract. Another advantage is that customers can customize their systems and purchase individual equipment and accessories that meet their needs. We also appreciate that its customer service agents were helpful in getting our questions answered.
What We Didn’t Like About Xfinity Home Security
Although we appreciate Xfinity’s personalization options, the company has some drawbacks. These are potential pitfalls a customer may want to consider.
- Self-protection fees: Xfinity charges $10 a month for customers who monitor their own equipment.
