About Liberty Home Guard

Liberty Home Guard started offering home warranty plans in 2017. In the company’s short history, it’s become one of the highest-rated home warranty providers in the industry, scoring over 4.5 stars on the BBB.

The company provides customers with simple plan choices that cover appliances, home systems or both. All plans are customizable through Liberty’s long list of 36 add-on protections. Plans vary in price from $49.99 to $59.99 at the highest service fee level of $125 per claim. However, service fees can be as low as $65 per claim with costlier plan pricing.

When shopping for our plan from Liberty, we discovered that ordering coverage was straightforward yet thorough enough to ensure we received the add-on coverages we desired.

Liberty Home Guard prefers to use its network of approved service technicians to perform repairs and replacements and places a 60-day work guarantee on its services. However, customers can choose their own contractor in some situations with prior approval.

Choose from month-to-month terms when choosing a plan or opt for a one- to five-year contract to take advantage of associated savings when choosing a longer term. A cancellation fee of $50 will apply after 30 days, and coverage for some items may depend on the customer’s ability to produce maintenance documentation.

Securing a Home Warranty Plan: We Put Liberty Home Guard to the Test

We used our mystery shopper process to examine Liberty Home Guard from a customer’s perspective. When shopping for a home warranty policy with the company, we found the purchasing process to be as straightforward as its uncomplicated coverage plans. Our sample property consisted of a 1,500-square-foot single-family home in Austin, Texas. We examined the purchase of Liberty’s most basic plan and its Total Home Guard plan.

Customers simply input their location and basic details about the home to order a plan from the company.

After providing details and choosing a plan, the page lists all the add-on coverage options available and their associated monthly prices. Customers can choose options by clicking on their desired items.

After choosing additional coverage options, clicking the checkout tab at the bottom of the page takes customers to the company’s payment page. On the final page, customers can choose to receive a home insurance quote from Progressive and choose a contract length from one month to five years. The page lists available pricing discounts for choosing longer-length terms. After selecting, the final cost is revealed before inputting payment information.

The only detail missing from the online selection process is the option to choose the desired service fee level. However, the site provides the company’s contact information on the page to make adjustments before purchasing a plan.

What We Like About Liberty Home Guard

Several positive attributes surrounding Liberty Home Guard account for our high rating of the company. The list includes Liberty’s straightforward plan options, divided simply between appliances, systems or both. However, more impressive is the company’s dedication to customization through its ample supply of additional coverage options.

Additionally, Liberty Home Guard earns high praise from its customers in the form of excellent average customer review ratings.

What We Didn’t Like About Liberty Home Guard

Liberty Home Guard places a $2,000 maximum payout per covered item within its plans. While most consumers aren’t likely to hit that maximum under normal circumstances, the amount is substantially less than some of its competitors and some customers could reach that threshold.

In some situations, customers can choose their own contractors for services, but only after receiving approval from the company. Additionally, Liberty Home Guard may ask for maintenance documentation for systems or appliances when deciding if a particular repair is eligible for coverage protection.

Payout Limitations and Other Considerations From Liberty Home Guard

While Liberty Home Guard plans and add-on options cover a wide range of appliances and home systems, some exclusions and limitations apply, including the following restrictions.

  • Routine maintenance isn’t covered.
  • Commercial-grade equipment is ineligible for coverage unless specifically listed.
  • Components, filters, glass and smart products associated with covered items, but not specific to them, aren’t covered.
  • Diagnosis and testing are typically not covered.
  • Refrigerant recovery and appliance or system disposals aren’t covered in most cases
  • Payouts are limited to $2,000 per covered item per year

Liberty Home Guard vs. AFC Home Warranty

AFC Home Warranty is another company that ranks high on our list of home warranty providers. Comparing Liberty Home Guard and AFC Home Warranty can be challenging. Liberty Home Guard offers simple plans that cover appliances, systems or both. AFC Home Warranty also offers appliance and system plans but also provides two combined plan options.

Liberty Home Guard offers customization of its more simple plans by providing a long list of additional coverage options. While AFC Home Warranty offers fewer add-ons, its plan inclusions and additional membership benefits are more substantial.
Pricing is comparable between the two companies. Although some AFC plans can cost over $150 per month, choosing multiple additional coverages through Liberty can increase the monthly cost to similar amounts.

Liberty Home Guard vs. Choice Home Warranty

Another home warranty company that ranks well in our reviews is Choice Home Warranty. Liberty Home Guard and Choice Home Warranty operate quite differently from each other.

Where Liberty Home Guard offers three plan choices and multiple add-on protections, Choice Home Warranty offers just two plans. Both of these plans cover a nearly identical list of items and have fewer add-ons. Choice varies its plan coverages not by item but by level of protection.

Choice also offers a single $100 service fee level, compared to Liberty’s multiple options ranging from $65 to $125.

However, despite the differences, pricing between the two is comparable, and each company strives for pricing simplicity using different approaches.

Liberty Home Guard Reviews and Experience

Reviews from its customers generally reflect a high level of customer service satisfaction. Consistently rating between high 3-star and 5-star reviews, most customers report being happy with the service they receive from the company and the service technicians.

However, a small percentage of poor reviews exist. Poor reviews generally describe items not being covered as expected, slow response times and having to pay unexpected costs after repair services.

Bottom Line: Is Liberty Home Guard Right for You?

Matching a plan to the contents of your home is essential to making any home warranty worth it. Liberty Home Guard tackles this problem by offering simple plans and numerous additional coverage options. Liberty Home Guard will appeal most to homeowners who don’t need or want to pay for extra plan coverages that don’t apply to their homes.

Liberty offers plans for single-family houses, manufactured homes, condos and rental properties. Liberty Home Guard may be a solid solution for customers seeking a simple plan that they can adjust to fit their needs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does Liberty Home Guard cover?

Liberty Home Guard offers three plan options, including a plan for appliances, a plan for home systems and a combined plan covering all of the above. The company’s most comprehensive plan, Total Home Guard, covers a mix of 16 major appliances and built-in home systems, including but not limited to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, cooking and laundry machines.

What does Liberty Home Guard not cover?

A home warranty differs from home insurance. Liberty Home Guard doesn’t offer protections found in home insurance, such as the home’s structure or damage caused by natural disasters or extreme weather. Notable exclusions to Liberty Home Guard’s home warranty-specific protections include attic fans, some labor costs, diagnosis expenses, refrigerant recapture, item disposal and commercial-grade products.

Does Liberty Home Guard cover roof leaks?

Liberty Home Guard covers roof leaks as an add-on coverage option. However, the coverage is limited, with several exclusions. The company’s roof leak protection only pays for roof leak patching over an occupied living area. Coverage doesn’t extend to metal roofs, cracked shingles, tar and gravel or flat roofs, gutters or flashing around common roof components, including skylights and chimneys.

Does Liberty Home Guard cover preexisting conditions?

Liberty Home Guard offers no provisions for covering preexisting conditions in appliances or home systems. In order to qualify for coverage, an item must be in working order and properly maintained before the customer purchases the policy.

Does Liberty Home Guard require a home inspection?

A home inspection isn’t required to purchase a home warranty plan from Liberty Home Guard. However, the company may ask for maintenance documentation for certain items at the time of service to ensure its failure isn’t due to neglect.
