Every moving company that engages in interstate moving must meet various criteria, such as FMCSA and DOT registration and licensing. However, with so many moving companies in the business, proper registration is hardly a limiting factor. Assuming you’ve identified a carrier properly licensed to move you over a state border, here are the other factors to consider when determining which one to hire.
Determine the Services You Need
Moving companies offer a wide range of various moving services. However, not every company offers every service. For instance, you may need to move a vehicle or two to your destination, especially with interstate moving. Ensure the company you hire for your household moving can also handle transporting your automobiles to eliminate the need to find another service provider.
Be sure that you’re taking stock of your unique moving needs before narrowing down your moving company list and be sure to speak with any potential company about your unique needs and services you’re particularly interested in.
Compare Cost and Quotes
While the total cost of your move is a huge determiner of which company to choose, it’s not necessarily the most important: The most crucial cost factor is more about what you get in return for the quoted price.
Be sure to ask for itemized quotes and compare individual services when comparing quotes from multiple moving companies. Take extra care to determine exactly which services the estimated price includes and if the quote will cover what you need in a move.
Additionally, cost should not be your only determining factor. Be sure to consider the cost for each service and each company’s total cost as data points while also considering the company’s track record and more.
Check Licensing and Regulatory Bodies
There are strict requirements that all interstate moving companies must follow, including being registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Be sure to search for a moving company’s USDOT number before signing on. Many companies will have this number displayed on their websites, but double-checking is always a good idea.
You can also search the FMCSA for resources about how moving companies in good standing should operate and your rights as a moving company customer. Remember, these regulations are only mandatory for interstate moving companies.
Consider Additional Moving Insurance
Moving insurance is one of the most important aspects to consider, especially when moving across state lines. These types of moves are typically larger and include more moving parts, so you’ll want to make sure you’re protected by adequate insurance.
Most moving companies will offer additional insurance options above their standard protection promise. Types you’ll typically see include full-value protection and released-value protection. Ask for more info about what each insurance tier means to each specific company, how much each costs and how much it protects you. Be sure to ask about how you would go about filing a claim and exact coverage stipulations before signing on with any moving company.
Compare Customer Ratings and Experiences
Customer ratings and reviews are excellent for obtaining a quick overview of an interstate moving company. However, there’s more to the story. Most companies, including movers, receive a mix of good and bad reviews on places like Google Reviews, Yelp, the BBB and other similar sites. The rating score is typically an average number of all or a group of these reviews.
To get the most out of your effort when comparing one company against another using customer ratings, read several of the reviews, both good and bad. While you’re not likely to find a company with perfect scores or reviews, reading the comments can help determine whether or not a mover’s shortcomings might affect your move.

Follow The Company's Lead
Start by following the instructions directly from the moving company, including their tipping policy. They’ll suggest how to prepare appliances like your washer or refrigerator days in advance. If you have plenty of notice before your move, it’s best to declutter and purge as much as possible before the movers arrive so they can work faster. On moving day, it’s a nice gesture to supply drinks and lunch for the crew.

Keep Communication Consistent
Check in with the company for their specific rules and guidelines. Some companies will require you to pack completely beforehand; others may do the packing for you if those terms were previously agreed upon. Additionally, get rid of anything you don’t need. Finally, ensure that the lines of communication are open between you and the onsight movers. Let them know, as best as you can, where belongings need to go, which boxes are fragile and so on.
Plan Where Your Moving Truck Will Park, and Keep Pets Clear
Make sure you know where your mover can park their truck. Do you have room in your personal driveway, or will they need to get a special permit to park on the street? These are all important things to consider. Another detail that’s easy to forget is prepping your pets. Your movers will likely need to keep the door open while moving things in and out. Your pets need to be secure and out of the way to prevent an escape attempt or someone getting hurt.
