Christopher Abbott is looking to establish himself as the next James Dean.

The “Girls” alum could be returning to TV with the upcoming Netflix adaptation of “East Of Eden,” which was Dean’s first major film debut in 1955. Both projects are based on the John Steinbeck novel. Deadline reported that Abbott was in talks to be cast.

As previously announced in 2022, Zoe Kazan is writing and executive producing the series that is led by Florence Pugh, who will also co-produce along with Anonymous Content and Endeavor Content.

Kazan’s grandfather Elia Kazan directed the 1955 film for Warner Bros. that centered on the Trask family.

At its core, John Sturges’s Gunfight at the O.K. Corral is another retelling of the exploits of Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) and Doc Holliday (Kirk Douglas) where the facts are buried under layers of myth. Doc is introduced as a surly card sharp and drunk, and he’s ultimately steered out of trouble by Wyatt. This is a different approach from John Ford’s My Darling Clementine, in which Doc doesn’t appear until well into the film and is a public nuisance to Wyatt and others. Marisa Pavan, the Italian actress who received an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for the 1955 drama The Rose Tattoo, died Wednesday at her home in Gassin, France. She was 91 and no cause was given. Her death was announced on her official social media site.

Pavan, the sister of actress Pier Angeli, appeared in such films as Diane (1956), starring Lana Turner, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956) with Gregory Peck, and in the film noir The Midnight Story (1957) with Tony Curtis.

In The Rose Tattoo, Pavan played Rosa, who grieves the death of her husband until meeting a truck driver played by Burt Lancaster.

Pavan lost in her Oscar category to Jo Van Fleet, who also appeared in The Rose Tattoo, but won the Oscar for East of Eden.

Marisa Pavan, the Italian actress and twin sister of Pier Angeli who received an Oscar nomination for her performance as the daughter of Anna Magnani’s seamstress in the 1955 drama The Rose Tattoo, has died. She was 91.

Pavan died Wednesday in her sleep at her home in Gassin, France, near Saint-Tropez, Margaux Soumoy, who wrote Pavan’s 2021 biography, Drop the Baby; Put a Veil on the Broad!, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Pavan also portrayed the French queen Catherine de’ Medici in Diane (1956), starring Lana Turner; an Italian girl who had an affair years ago with a corporate exec (Gregory Peck) in The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956); and the love interest of a former cop (Tony Curtis) investigating the murder of a priest in the film noir The Midnight Story (1957).

Actors doing the absolute most in commitment to their character have a long history in the film industry. To achieve his coyote-esque look in Dan Gilroy's 2014 neo-noir "Nightcrawler," Jake Gyllenhaal dropped 30 pounds, while Christian Bale's extreme weight loss to play a boxer dealing with drug addiction in 2010's "The Fighter" earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his troubles. A comedic scene in Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" wasn't working until Jonah Hill took a real sock in the jaw from co-star Jon Bernthal. But men aren't the only ones unafraid of getting physical for their roles; for John Sturges' western classic "Gunfight at the O.K. It was the shootout that elevated the likes of Wyatt Earp and dentist-turned-gunslinger Doc Holiday to mythic status. Several features have honored the fabled event, but John Sturges' "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" stands tall as one of the most illustrious retellings of the infamous 1881 Tombstone, Arizona shootout.

The classic western stars Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and a bristled Kirk Douglas as Holiday, in one of their several big-screen collaborations. Stricken with tuberculosis, Holiday's scenes are earmarked by an intermittent tickle in the throat that, over the runtime, progresses to a full-blown hack. "This kind of cough doesn't go away," he tells the lawman, but he won't resign himself to a slow, peaceful death. Never cowering, whether by the bullet or by bacteria, Douglas keeps his character's physical ailments wrapped under a thick cloak of steely-eyed grit. In his autobiography, "The Ragman's Son," "Spartacus" star and cinema luminary Kirk Douglas makes much of his longtime friendship with the hulking legendary actor Burt Lancaster. The two first worked together on Lisabeth Scott's 1947 noir classic "I Walk Alone," which sees Lancaster's convict battle his former bootlegging, currently two-timing business partner (Douglas).

Their second big-screen pairing was in "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral," a John Sturges Western chronicling the storied 1881 Tombstone, Arizona shootout. Therein, Douglas would play the ailing gunslinger Doc Holliday to Lancaster's tenacious Wyatt Earp, two tough men whose tense alliance would blossom into diehard loyalty. Though the duo would go on to star in a handful of movies together it was on the set of the 1957 American Western where the two actors really hit it off.

"The Ragman's Son" carries the details of production, a shoot largely oscillating between the historically-relevant location of Tucson, Arizona, and Paramount Studio sets back in California.

Sara Shane, who starred opposite Gordon Scott in Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure and appeared alongside Clark Gable in The King and Four Queens, has died. She was 94.

Shane died July 31 on the Gold Coast of Australia, her family announced.

Shane also starred with Kathleen Hughes and Marla English in the melodrama Three Bad Sisters (1956) and had the female lead in Affair in Havana (1957), featuring John Cassavetes and Raymond Burr.

With the Jane character absent in the John Guillermin-directed Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure (1959), Shane stepped in to portray Angie Loring, an American model and pilot who meets up with the King of the Jungle in Africa. The film was Scott’s fourth as Tarzan.

Netflix is developing a miniseries based on John Steinbeck’s massive 700-page novel “East of Eden,” as reported on Tuesday. Florence Pugh is the first cast member announced, though it is unclear who she’ll be playing. (Will a modern spin change the story—a California tale loosely based on the Biblical trope of Cain and Abel—into the story of two sisters? Crazier things have happened!)

The most exciting news, however, is how this production is “keeping it in the family,” so to speak. Zoe Kazan has been announced as writer and executive producer. Her grandfather, the legendary Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 adaptation starring James Dean, Raymond Massey, Julie Harris, Burl Ives, and Jo Van Fleet, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Florence Pugh is breathing new life into another classic novel: The Little Women star is set to headline Netflix’s adaptation of East of Eden, our sister site Deadline reports.

The limited series, currently in early development at the streamer, will be written and executive-produced by actress/writer Zoe Kazan. (Her grandfather Elia Kazan directed the original 1955 film version.) Based on the John Steinbeck novel, East of Eden follows several generations of the Trask family — and the movie version gave a young James Dean his first major screen role. Pugh will play Cathy Ames, the role played by Jo Van Fleet in the film.

Frank Perry’s version of the shootout at the O.K. Corral shapes up as a fine western and an even better drama — the revisionist angle is supported by an excellent script and thoughtful, challenging characterizations. Tombstone’s frontier folk are dirty, vulgar and corrupt, but Stacy Keach and Faye Dunaway generate a rough-hewn romantic harmony. Harris Yulin’s Wyatt Earp is a revelation as well — if this were modern times Earp would get a lock on city hall politics and go into the land development racket. The beautifully filmed movie looks terrific on disc. Alex Cox delivers a solid audio commentary as well.

I’ll Cry Tomorrow, a biopic of singer Lillian Roth, won Susan Hayward the fourth of her five Oscar nominations, in 1955. The film starts with a young Lillian and her stage mother, played by Jo Van Fleet. Ten minutes in, though, Hayward gets a true star entrance belting out “Sing You Sinners” in a lengthy number with only four cuts.

It’s a fun introduction, partially because you try to place yourself in 1955, when part of the excitement (one guesses) was hearing Hayward sing for the first time, and it’s quite a boisterous number. Then Hayward was known mostly as a tragedienne (Hollywood star variety), it must have been a blast for audiences to see Hayward let loose (Hollywood star style) in a big production number...

Warning: if you’re not a Kate Jackson fan, today’s column may not work in your favor. Plus, we probably shouldn’t hang out. I first fell in love with Ms. Jackson (if you’re nasty) when I was six. At the time, she was starring on Charlie’s Angels, along with Farrah Blah-Blah and Jaclyn What’s Her Name, but I think maybe I liked Kate best. Her long black hair, radiant smile, and raspy sing song drawl mesmerized me for the remainder of that show’s run. Brooks' multiple Oscar-nominated Broadcast News is everything the largely forgotten Swing Shift isn't: belabored, artificial, superficial. Elia Kazan’s 1960 film Wild River, which stars Montgomery Clift, Lee Remick, Joan Van Fleet, and is Bruce Dern’s debut film, celebrates its 55th anniversary this year. The Royale Laemmle Theater in Los Angeles will be holding a special one-night-only showing of the 110-minute film on Thursday, September 17th, 2015 at 7:30 pm. Actor Bruce Dern is scheduled to appear at the screening and is due to partake in a Q & A and discussion on the making of the film.

London, Sep 27: Jennifer Lawrence is set to star in a remake of the James Dean film 'East of Eden,' it has been revealed.

The new film will reunite the Academy award winning actress with director, Gary Ross, with whom she worked on 'The Hunger Games,' the BBC reported.

The story, which is based on John Steinbeck's classic novel, revolves around rival brothers who compete for their father's attention on a Californian farm.

Lawrence is set to play the estranged mother of the brothers.

In Elia Kazan's 1955 film version of the book, the role of the mother was played by Jo Van Fleet, who won a best supporting.

Hunger Games actor will play 'psychotic monster' Cathy Ames in fresh take on Steinbeck's epic novel, directed by Gary Ross

Jennifer Lawrence is set to star as Cathy Ames in a fresh film adaptation of East of Eden, John Steinbeck's epic saga of blood ties and betrayal in 1900s California. Variety reports that the picture will be backed by Universal and directed by Gary Ross, who collaborated with Lawrence on The Hunger Games.

Published in 1952, East of Eden relocated the Book of Genesis to the Salinas valley and implicitly installed Cathy, an abused young woman who later changes her name and becomes a brothel madam, as the serpent in paradise. The character is described by Steinbeck as a "psychotic monster" with a "malformed soul". The novel was previously adapted by Elia Kazan in 1955, with Jo Van Fleet in the Cathy role and James Dean as her troubled son, Cal.

John Steinbeck's literary classic "East of Eden" has been tackled a couple of notable times, the first of which is obviously Elia Kazan's adaptation starring James Dean and Jo Van Fleet and the second being 1981's mini-series starring Timothy Bottoms and Jane Seymour. Now Jennifer Lawrence is the first to sign on for a new adaptation, reteaming with her The Hunger Games director, Gary Ross. Ross apparently wants to tell the generational story across two films, telling the story of two sons competing for the attention of their father. Lawrence is being sought to play Cathy Ames, the two boys' presumed dead mother. Imagine Entertainment will produce for Universal Pictures. Ross is currently set to direct Peter and the Starcatchers for Walt Disney Pictures while Lawrence will be seen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and reteaming with her Silver Linings Playbook director for American Hustle, both in theaters later this year.

Gary Ross ditched out "The Hunger Games" franchise while it was still a way hot commodity, leaving the seat toasty warm for director Francis Lawrence to slide in and helm "Catching Fire" and both installments to "Mockingjay."

Ross declared that it was the tight turnaround schedule for movie two which turned him around from wanting to handle the sequel at all, but he never stopped singing the praises of his leading lady Jennifer Lawrence (because obviously).

J.Law herself is a known director loyalist, so if you're one of those who totally hearted the Ross/Lawrence combo pack — yeah, we saw that tribute video — you're doubly in luck because it looks the duo'll team up again for not one but two other book-to-screen adaptations.

Deadline reports that J.Law has been plucked to star in both of Ross' newest projects, "East of Eden" and "Burial Rites."

Ross will split the story into two films, and will have Lawrence play Cathy Ames, the cold mother of two sons competing for their father's attention. The book was immortalized on the big screen in 1955 by legendary director Elia Kazan, and was one of James Dean's few feature film roles. It snagged several Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won a statuette for actress Jo Van Fleet's supporting role.

While Kazan stuck to one movie, Deadline reports that Ross's plan to turn "East of Eden" into two will allow a more in-depth exploration of the relationship between Cathy and her husband, which will then lead into a depiction of the sons' rivalry.
