There’s a certain joy to be felt when discovering a new voice in film. Taking the risk to sit down in and watch a director’s first feature, witnessing how they grapple and contend with cinema. Each year, there are great debuts, to be sure, but in 2015, it seemed to me to be unusually strong for first-time filmmakers (not a few films listed here are on my overall best of the year list as well).
A few notes regarding the eligibility: the majority of these films had a USA theatrical release date in 2015, but in the spirit of including more foreign films – some of which have yet to find a distributor in North America – I have also included several films which only had festival release dates in 2015, or only had theatrical releases in their country of origin. The question of which films are eligible seems to be an arbitrary line,...

Director: Julius Avery; Screenwriter: Julius Avery; Starring: Ewan McGregor, Brenton Thwaites, Alicia Vikander; Running time: 108 mins; Certificate: 15
A reasonably engaging thriller, Son of a Gun is most notable for reminding us of that Ewan McGregor still possesses that irresistibly dangerous and edgy quality that propelled him to stardom in Shallow Grave and Trainspotting. It also serves as a calling card for the talents of Australian writer-director Julius Avery, who orchestrates several tense sequences that help to sustain our involvement in events.
Son of a Gun never quite capitalises on a bold beginning that's bathed in brutality and intrigue, as we enter the menacing confines of a prison through the eyes of 19-year-old Jr (Brenton Thwaites). Avery's tight framing and Jed Kurzel's suitably oppressive score amplify the intimidating environment for us alongside Jr, who soon comes under the protection of fellow inmate and Australia's most notorious criminal Brendan Lynch (McGregor...

It's been 50 years since Jean-Luc Godard said that all a film needs is a girl and a gun. Bet he wishes he could take that back. In the last half-century, there have been countless movies about babes and bullets. Some were great, many were awful, and the vast majority were simply forgettable.
Slot Son of a Gun into that middling pack. First-time feature director Julius Avery shouldn't be ashamed of his serviceable debut. The handsome, paint-by-numbers thriller stars Ewan McGregor as gruff chess buff Brendan Lynch, who's also the most fearsome convict in Australia. Lynch is small but mighty. He pads down the prison hallways flanked by frightening brutes with even scarier haircuts. Though he's got twenty years left to serve, he radiates the calm of a man who knows he'll find ...

Stars present and future butt heads in this new clip from Australian crimer thriller Son Of A Gun. In the red corner is Ewan McGregor as Australia's-most-wanted-type hardnut lunatic, Brendan Lynch; in the blue is Pirates Of The Caribbean 5's Brenton Thwaites as 19 year-old Jr, a relative newcomer to the muscle-topped gang. It's probably safest to put your Aussie dollars on the former - seriously muscled-up for this one - before clicking play on this one. brightcove.createExperiences(); The set-up sees Brendan (McGregor), with charm to match his menace, taking the young con under his wing when some lags try to brutalise him. His seeming saviour has one or two stipulation, however, namely that Jr helps him with a big heist on the outside. However, his planned getaway pilot has a new girlfriend (Alicia Vikander) and the job has lost some of its sheen since his release. This scene...

From first-time director Julius Avery, Son Of A Gun is an explosive action thriller exploring the aftermath of a prison break. Ewan McGregor tackles the lead as the charismatic Brendan, a manipulative criminal kingpin. Along for the ride as his sidekick is Brenton Thwaites’ sympathetic Jr. The pair of accomplices rustle up a way out of the Australian slammer and strike up a professional deal on the outside.
In September, we brought you the first clip, which served as a very brief introductory moment between the pair of convicts. Definitely a tease for the bigger picture, there’s now a ton more footage in the full-length trailer that expands upon the dangerous relationship Jr enters into with Brendan. There’s also a gold mine robbery and an impossibly gorgeous bit of love interest in the shape of Alicia Vikander thrown in for good measure. Well, it Is a heist flick.

There’s many stories that never go out of style. The heist flick is certainly at the top of that list. It’s a popular sub-genre because it can easily avoid the timestamp. Certainly, modern movies implement technology into their schemes, but sometimes it’s just a coupla guys, a girl and a plan. And you don’t need tech for that choice premise to work beautifully.
For writer-director, Julius Avery, his upcoming crime caper Son Of A Gun marks his directorial feature debut. It’s a low-budget story of career criminal Brendan Lynch (played by Ewan McGregor) whose attractive darkside is too much for impressionable youngster Jr (Brenton Thwaites.) As soon as the kid becomes embroiled in a deal that “can’t go wrong” – it does go wrong.

Evidently skipping the fall film festival circuit and premiering in Australia later this month, the new Aussie crime drama “Son Of A Gun” is nonetheless on the way. The feature-length debut of award-winning short writer/director Julius Avery, 'Son Of A Gun' stars Ewan McGregor, Alicia Vikander and Brenton Thwaites. New posters and photos of the movie surfaced late last night, revealing a heist picture focusing on a career criminal’s (a beardy McGregor) complicated relationship with his protegé (Thwaites). Bring on more Aussie crime dramas. Scottish actor Ewan McGregor is very versatile - he can play hard or soft and always pull it off with grace. One of his upcoming movies is titled Son of a Gun, an Aussie crime drama about a youngster named Jr, played by Brenton Thwaites who you can see starring in The Giver soon, that ends up working for "Australia's most notorious criminal, Brendan Lynch", or McGregor with a gnarly beard. This looks like a film David Michôd would be directing (see The Rover), but it's something fresh from newcomer Julius Avery, and hits theaters down in Oz in October (no Us release yet). More below. Here's the first batch of photos + a poster for Julius Avery's from Son of a Gun found via The Film Stage: Locked up for a minor crime, 19 year old Jr (Thwaites) quickly learns the harsh realities of prison life.

Great British Bake Off returns later this month and we're already loosening our belt by a few notches and stocking up on boxes of Mr Kipling bakewell tarts in anticipation of a cake extravaganza. A Cake-ganza, if you will.
Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry are back to munch their way through pastries, tartlets, pies and sponges galore, while we sit at home on our sofas stuffing our gobs with Curly Wurlys and looking on enviously.
This year's contestants include a dentist, a psychologist and a carpenter - plenty of pun opportunities for Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins with that trio - and the opening episode alone will feature the bakers tackling sandwich cakes, angel fool cakes and chocolate Showstoppers.
We've just got a call from the future. The name of the caller is diabetes.
If you can't possibly wait until next Tuesday to find out more details about this year's batch of sweet treat creators,...
