The I.P.-ification of television has come for HBO, although not at the same gluttonous levels seen at other networks. New HBO original series in 2025 will include a prequel to the hit film franchise, “It” (via the ominous title “Welcome to Derry”), the latest “Game of Thrones” spinoff “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” and various DC superhero extensions, the latter of which is still housed under the Max originals branding.
But for how long? Last year saw a slew of high-profile programs shift brands, as “The Penguin” and “Dune: Prophecy” both launched under the HBO banner after first being developed behind the thin wall separating one of television’s most prestigious networks from its latest streaming home. “Welcome to Derry” crossed over from Max, too, as did anticipated titles being prepped for next year: namely, the untitled “Harry Potter” series and DC’s Green Lantern show, “Lanterns.” Where...

In June 2019, J.J. Abrams signed a massive $500 million deal with Warner Bros., aiming to create content, mentor new talent, and turn his Bad Robot production company into a powerhouse mini-studio. Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath, were set to lead this ambitious vision.
However, as of 2024, the deal has fallen short of expectations, according to Variety. Despite big plans, Bad Robot struggled to meet financial and production goals. Key projects like Madame X and Overlook were canceled by HBO Max, while others, such as Duster, have been delayed for years, despite high costs. Overall, the partnership has yet to deliver the returns Warner Bros. had hoped for.
Hollywood is tightening its belt, and J.J. Abrams’ once-massive $500 million deal has been scaled back to a more modest agreement. This shift marks the end of an era where massive nine-figure deals were commonplace. The industry is grappling with economic challenges, including layoffs,...

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot has closed a new first-look film and TV deal with Warner Bros. Television, with the pact expected to be non-exclusive and last for two years, two people familiar with the matter tell TheWrap.
It follows the previous 2019 pact between the two parties, a five-year overall deal that was more expensive. Projects released under that deal included Prime Video’s “Caped Crusader,” Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent,” HBO’s “Charlie Hustle & The Matter of Pete Rose” and “Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tape” and the documentary “Yankees Win.”
Representatives for Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV declined to comment.
The latest agreement comes after overall deal volume and their price tags have dropped following the Hollywood strikes and belt-tightening at the major media giants.
Looking ahead, Bad Robot’s projects include Max’s “Duster” and other shows in the works including “Speed Racer.” On the film side,...

Back in June 2019, J.J. Abrams struck a huge deal with Warner Bros. worth $500 million, one of the biggest in Hollywood at the time. The deal allowed Abrams to not only create content but also recruit and mentor new talent through his Bad Robot production company.
The idea was for him to become a mogul, with his company becoming a mini-studio, incubating fresh voices. Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath, were set to lead the charge.
However, as of 2024, the deal has not played out as Warner Bros. might have hoped, Variety reports. While Abrams’ team had high ambitions, they struggled to meet financial and output targets. Bad Robot’s efforts, like setting deals with writers and producers such as Angela Robinson, Jessie Nelson, and Latoya Morgan, did not bear much fruit.

J.J. Abrams’ production firm, Bad Robot, has signed a new first-look deal with Warner Bros. This arrangement extends a nearly 20-year cooperation and responds strategically to the shifting landscape of the entertainment business.
The two-year non-exclusive pact replaces a five-year exclusive agreement for around $250 million that expired earlier this year. This new contract comes at a time when the entertainment industry is experiencing significant shifts, with fewer overall deals and more flexible arrangements for producers.
Bad Robot has shown tenacity in adapting to these developments. This summer, the company debuted popular ventures like the Prime Video series “Caped Crusader” and Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent.” The latter swiftly became the platform’s most popular drama launch and has already been extended for a second season. Bad Robot also released three documentaries: “Charlie Hustle & The Matter of Pete Rose,” “Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes,” and “Yankees Win.”

Back in June 2019, J.J. Abrams struck a massive overall deal that would keep him in the fold of Warner Bros., his home studio since 2006.
The five-year pact, pegged at $500 million at the time, had a unique structure that allowed Abrams to draw from a significant pool of money to sign other writers to overall deals. That positioned the multi-hyphenate behind “Felicity” and “Lost” as not just a content creator but a mogul whose Bad Robot production company would incubate the next generation of storytellers, with Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath, overseeing the stable. Five and a half years later, Warner Bros. doesn’t have much to show for all the coin that it showered on Abrams, even as the value of the deal dropped by half because Bad Robot failed to reach the financial and output benchmarks that would have triggered the full $500 million. With less leverage than it...

After The Penguin‘s Max release this year, the new change in the delineation of Max and HBO shows will come into effect from 2025. Most of the Warner Bros. IP films will essentially move under the HBO banner, including one much anticipated Dcu series under James Gunn. Warner Bros. Discovery is putting some of the “premium” back into its premium cable outlet, HBO.
In a branding strategy shift, several tentpole series that had been announced as original shows for streamer Max — including the in-development Harry Potter series and It prequel Welcome to Derry — will become HBO originals instead. The just-ordered Lanterns, based on DC Comics’ Green Lantern, was also first developed for Max but will now originate on HBO.
Those series will of course still stream on Max, as all HBO shows do. But the decision to bring the high-visibility, high-budget shows under the HBO umbrella represents a change in approach to how the two outlets, both headed by Casey Bloys, differentiate their programming.
When Bloys took charge of what was then HBO Max in 2020, the streamer was to be the home of all series based on pre-existing IP from Warner Bros. (in addition to shows like...

To paraphrase a long-running network slogan, “It’s Not Max. It’s HBO.” HBO and Max content CEO Casey Bloys is changing the delineation between what an “HBO show” and a “Max show” is, moving most of Max’s upcoming big-budget, tentpole Warner Bros. IP projects to under the HBO umbrella.

Also announced today was the news that Sharon Taylor, formerly CEO of Animal Logic Studios, will return to Netflix to head up production on feature animation, based out of Vancouver.

The whispers last year about a potential ER revival weren’t true, but this could be the next best thing.
Max has handed out a 15-episode, straight-to-series order for The Pitt, a look at front-line medical workers in Pittsburgh starring Noah Wyle and from ER duo John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill.
Max describes The Pitt as a “a realistic examination of the challenges facing health care workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the front-line heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh.”
Gemmill, who executive produced more than half of ER’s 330 episodes across its 15 seasons, will serve as showrunner on the series, which hails from John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. TV. Wells and Wyle will also be credited as exec producers.

Channing Dungey first joined Warner Bros. TV Group as chairman in late 2020 — right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, which made for an interesting first year on the job. Then came the Warner Media-Discovery merger in 2022, and the restructuring that came with it. In 2023, the Hollywood strikes disrupted the business again.
“It’s been a lot of tumult since I’ve been in the role,” Dungey recently reflected to Variety. “I’m hoping — and I’m knocking wood as I say this — that as we round the corner into 2024, we’re behind some of those bigger challenges. I’m sure there will be something new on the horizon, but I’m hopeful that 2024 marks a return to business as usual.”
The entertainment industry remains in flux, of course, with more disruption anticipated this year. But in her own corner of the biz, Dungey said she feels some truly positive momentum.

Hollywood is at a crossroads and the 160,000 actors that make up SAG-AFTRA are seemingly in the driver’s seat.
Will there be an actors strike, on top of the writers strike, which is in its ninth week? What happens if there are two strikes? Will SAG-AFTRA extend its negotiations with the studios and then strike? Or will they extend and strike a deal? Would an actors strike compound the pain across the entertainment industry that is already reeling from the writers strike?
Deadline revealed Wednesday that SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are considering extending negotiations until next week (July 7) or later. This also would make sense given that most of Hollywood will be out of town for a long holiday weekend.
In addition to these questions, there are dozens of rumors flying around on the picket lines and Beverly Hills lunch spots. There’s talk...

Six weeks into the writers strike, the early returns on summer studio films have been some of the best since Covid brought the exhibition business to a screeching halt. But if SAG-AFTRA members trade lines of dialogue for picket lines beginning July 1, the business might well look like pandemic redux.
The domestic box office is just getting back on its feet, nearing $4 billion for the year and coursing 30% ahead of the same January-to-early June period a year ago. Theatrical release dates have again become prized commodities worth millions of dollars in revenue and the grease for triggering movies’ downstream revenues. And theatrical has regained a spotlight stolen by streamers during the Covid shutdown.
But what happens to the lineup of summer and fall films and their release slots, film and TV production starts and carefully calibrated Emmy campaigns if there are no actors to promote their films and make new ones?...

The Writers Guild of America 2023 strike is continuing to make a dent in upcoming Hollywood projects.
The strike began May 2, with multiple productions halting in solidarity with the demonstrations. The WGA strike took effect after six weeks of unsuccessful negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, representing the likes of Netflix, Disney, Apple, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Amazon, and more. Writers are demanding better pay, residuals structures, and protection against AI as a replacement tool for their work, among other concerns.
While the strike has not yet affected some upcoming consecutive seasons of fan-favorite shows, “Saturday Night Live” and a handful of late-night talk shows including Jimmy Kimmel, “The Late Show,” and “The Tonight Show” have gone dark. Manhattan picketers have also protested outside filming on the latest season of “Billions,” though the long-running Showtime series has yet to come to a full stop.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming plans in India have come into focus. The studio unveiled a multiyear deal Thursday with Viacom18 that will make the Indian entertainment giant’s JioCinema streaming platform the new online home of thousands of hours of film and TV content from HBO, Max Original and Warner Bros.
Wbd content was previously licensed in India by Disney’s Star TV, but that deal expired in March. Wbd and Viacom18 say their new partnership, which begins in May, includes exclusive content rights across digital and linear. And users will be able to watch HBO Original, Max Original and Warner Bros. Television series on JioCinema on the same day as their U.S. release.
The new deal adds to growing market sway of Viacom18’s streaming channels, which in 2022 acquired all digital rights for five years to Indian Premier League cricket, India’s most popular sporting event by far.

Warner Bros. Discovery and Viacom18 have revealed a multi-year agreement making JioCinema India’s new streaming home for HBO, Max Original and Warner Bros. content from May.
The Wbd content had previously been carried on the Disney-owned Star TV platform. But the deal with Star expired at the end of March. Wbd sources have confirmed that, except for a handful of shows licensed to third parties, HBO content has been absent from Indian airwaves since the beginning of the month.
The new deal is another major victory for Mukesh Ambani, one of India’s richest and most politically influential businessmen. His Reliance Industries Limited (Ril) is behind Viacom18 and the JioCinema streaming platform, as well as India’s dominant cellular phone and broadband internet providers.
Television series will premiere on JioCinema on the same day as the U.S. The deal includes current and future seasons of HBO’s “House of The Dragon,...

Two months before she reunites with Tom Cruise for another daring spy adventure, Rebecca Ferguson is leading a thriller of her own. The “Mission: Impossible” and “Dune” actor stars in the new trailer for “Silo,” a sci-fi drama series, released by Apple TV+ on Thursday.
The show is based on a series of science fiction novels by author Hugh Howey, which includes three books: “Wool,” “Shift,” and “Dust.” “Silo” is set in a dystopian future where all of humanity lives in the titular enclave, a subterranean city of mysterious origins. According to the leaders of the Silo, the 10,000 residents are the last of humanity, and the outside world is now toxic for human life. Ferguson plays Juliette, an engineer for the Silo who begins questioning the reality of her civilization following the death of a loved one, and embarks on a quest to discover the reality of life beyond the city.
