Plot: When Tommy Walcott is invited into a limo by famous actor Andy Samberg, his dull life takes a thrilling turn. Tommy is offered a chance to win a million dollars in a dark web reality TV show, where assassins from all over the world attempt to kill him for 30 days. The catch? He can’t be killed if he’s not entirely alone, leading him to recruit an unlikely team to help him survive.
Review: Jake Johnson is hilarious. After his breakout role as Nick Miller on Fox sitcom New Girl, Johnson has appeared alongside Tom Cruise in The Mummy, Chris Pratt in the Jurassic World franchise, and voicing Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. While Johnson has written several films, including Digging for Fire, Win It All, and Ride the Eagle, he makes his directorial debut with the new film Self Reliance.

The Adults is a family comedy-drama film, but it is R-rated because of its adult language. Written & Directed by Dustin Guy Defa, The Adults follows Eric as he takes a short trip back home to meet his sisters and old friends but the short trip turns into a mess of unresolved familial issues and a trip down the nostalgic lane. Michael Cera is producing and starring in the film. So, if you like The Adults, here are some similar movies you could watch next.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival. Hulu releases the film on its streaming platform on Friday, January 12.
Jake Johnson makes his feature directorial debut with “Self Reliance,” a comedy with a fascinating premise and an opening act that provides equal thrills and laughs. Unfortunately, while Johnson’s script shows promise, the actor/writer-turned-director squanders it with a lack of strong vision, and a rom-com element that makes the film lose focus, and also most laughs.
What if you take David Fincher’s “The Game,” but run it through The Lonely Island’s comedy filter? That’d get you close to “Self Reliance,” which starts strong but loses itself in an attempt to juggle too many tones at once. We meet Johnson’s protagonist, Tom, a man conforming to a sad routine he repeats every single day. He goes to the same bar, watches the same cowboy movies,...

With little by way of competition, Disney’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings easily held the no. 1 position at the box office last weekend.
The first Marvel title to feature an Asian lead and an predominantly Asian cast, Shang-Chi mustered $1.4 million in its second frame, a drop of 28 per cent, moving to $4 million.
It is a good result for the title given how heavily disrupted the marketplace is, and the Simu Liu and Awkwafina-starrer will likely get a boost this Thursday when it in released in the cinemas previously closed in parts of regional Victoria and Nsw.
Cinemas in regional Victoria (except Greater Shepparton) were able to reopen last Thursday, however under severe restrictions; 20 people per cinema. In certain parts of regional Nsw, theatres were back online Saturday morning at one person per 4 square metres or 75 per cent of seating capacity. Masks are compulsory indoors in both states.

Photo: ‘Ride the Eagle’/Decal Trent O’Donnell’s ‘Ride the Eagle’ begins with the character of Honey (Susan Sarandon) struggling to record a message for her son with a handheld camera, unintentionally ringing true for everyone who tried to communicate with their parents through facetime this past year. ‘Ride the Eagle’ follows Leif (Jake Johnson), an emotionally stunted stoner, who is left with a cabin after his estranged hippie mother, Honey, dies. To get the cabin though, Leif has to complete a series of tasks that will lead him to the road of self-discovery. The film, aiming to open the audience’s eyes to the smaller things in life and the importance of family, offers a heartwarming story that never really reaches the emotional heights it aims to. Exclusive: UK distributor Lightbulb Film Distribution has made its highest-profile acquisitions to date out of the recent Cannes virtual market, including comedy Ride The Eagle, starring Jake Johnson, D’Arcy Carden, J.K. Simmons and Susan Sarandon.
The movie follows Leif (Johnson) who inherits a picturesque log cabin after his estranged mother Honey (Sarandon) dies. But there is a condition; he must first complete her elaborate to-do list. With the help of his ex (Carden), local eccentric (Simmons) and Nora, his faithful canine companion, Leif embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
Trent O’Donnell directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Johnson. The deal was struck with Scott Bedno of Myriad Pictures.
“We are thrilled to be bringing Ride The Eagle to UK audiences this autumn. Shot entirely during lockdown, it’s a film that will make you laugh – and that’s something we need more than ever”, commented Lightbulb’s Sales & Acquisitions Director Peter Thompson.

“F9” (Universal/$19.99) is #1 on all four VOD charts we follow. It leads both on FandangoNow and Vudu, which list by rental revenue, and iTunes and Google Play, which rank by volume of renters. That suggests total dominance of home interest, but there’s a big caveat with “Jungle Cruise,” which opened #1 at the box office. It’s also available on Disney+ for $29.99 and the studio reported worldwide PVOD revenue of over $30 million for its first weekend. How much of that came from the U.S.is unclear, but the guess is most since VOD penetration is still lacking overseas.
Universal typically allows three weeks before opening the PVOD box office, but “F9” is the studio’s first title to wait five weeks. It grossed over $50 million on its opening weekend and under Universal’s agreement with theaters that meant a minimum 31 days for VOD.

“Death ends a life,” Robert Anderson noted in his 1968 play (and 1970 film adaptation) “I Never Sang for My Father,” “but it does not end a relationship, which struggles on the survivor’s mind, toward some resolution, which it may never find.” A truncated version of that memorable line — jettisoning everything after the word “relationship” — has been used, and abused, over the decades as a sentimental, one-size-fits-all aphorism to comfort the bereaved and sell greeting cards. It is much to the credit of the people who made “Ride the Eagle,” a film that generously laces its sentimentality with clear-eyed intelligence, that they frankly acknowledge how difficult such a resolution might be, even as they earn a few good laughs in the process.

"Ahhh I'm too stoned for this." Decal Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for an indie heartfelt comedy called Ride the Eagle, from filmmaker Trent O'Donnell, and co-written by the film's star, Jake Johnson. Leif is left with a "conditional inheritance" when his estranged mother Honey dies. Before he can move into her picturesque Yosemite cabin that she left him, he has to complete her elaborate, and sometimes dubious, to-do list. "Life is a long, weird trip." Off he goes to complete her list of things to do. The cast also includes Susan Sarandon, J.K. Simmons, D'Arcy Carden, Cleo King, & Eric Edelstein. Plus one cute black lab doggie. I'm always a fan of these kind of stories about someone being told to go out and rediscover life and try new things, always ending up changed in clever ways. Even better doing that with a dog. Take a look. Here's the...

AMC has debuted the first trailer for the upcoming series ‘The North Water.’
Based on the acclaimed novel by Ian McGuire, the five-part series tells the story of Patrick Sumner (O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic. Heatseeking indie distributor Decal has landed U.S. distribution rights to “Recovery,” a well-received comedy which played this year’s SXSW Film Festival.
From directors Mallory Everton and Stephen Meek, the road trip adventure follows two lost-soul sisters traveling across country to rescue their grandmother, whose nursing home suffers a Covid-19 outbreak. The project is described as “Booksmart” meets the Tom Hardy indie gem “Locke.” Everton co-stars and co-wrote the screenplay with Whitney Call.
Decal is plotting a hybrid theatrical and VOD release this fall. The film was produced by Sorø Films Production in partnership with BuzzFeed Studios. Scott Christopherson, Babetta Kelly and Abi Nielson Hunsaker served as producers.
