From 1944 to 1981, the Golden Globes opted not to have an emcee, with Robert Preston and Linda Gray being the first to tag-team the role in the 39th year. The ceremony returned to host-less the following year before employing a series cohosts – including the likes of William Shatner, Charlton Heston, Joan Collins, Faye Dunaway, and Tim Curry – from 1984 until 1995. After that, the Globe host gig was retired until 2010, when Gervais reinvigorated the format. For the past 15 years, several hosts have come and gone, for better and worse. In 2024, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the scandal-ridden longtime governing body of the Globes, was out and the ceremony relocated from NBC to CBS.

In the 97 years that the Academy Awards have been going, certain genres have always remained the underdogs, regardless of how general audiences may feel about them at any given time in history. When it comes to science-fiction, for example, only two entrants in the genre have actually walked away with the Best Picture Oscar, and both are more recent than you might expect. Spielberg’s reputation as a master entertainer came with the release of “Jaws,” his 1975 shark attack thriller. Made when he was just 29 years old, the film set box office records and made the summer safe for blockbusters again. Such following films as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) cemented Spielberg’s ability to create spectacular amusements that brought audiences to their feet.

He later moved into serious filmmaking with “The Color Purple” (1985), which paved the way for his 1993 Holocaust drama “Schindler’s List” (1993). That film swept the Academy Awards, bringing Spielberg Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture.

Universal Pictures’ blockbuster musical “Wicked” has been named best picture by the National Board of Review, the organization announced on Wednesday, in addition to taking home the directing prize for Jon M. Chu and a special award for the collaboration of stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

“Silent River” is created by Aaron Rabin, who serves as an executive producer. In addition to Krasinski, Rhys and Rabin, Allyson Seeger and Alexa Ginsburg will executive produce for Sunday Night. Krasinski is set to direct the show’s pilot and some additional episodes. Andrew Bernstein is also set to direct and executive produce.

In addition to the series order, Sunday Night has renewed its first-look television deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

Amazon Prime Video has given a series order to the drama series “Silent River” with John Krasinski and Matthew Rhys attached to star, Variety has learned.

Both Krasinski and Rhys will also executive produce the series, with Krasinski also set to direct the pilot and additional episodes. Krasinski is executive producing under his and Allyson Seeger’s Sunday Night production banner, which has renewed its first-look television deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

Searchlight Pictures has released the official trailer for the psychological horror-thriller film Hold Your Breath, which will debut on Hulu on October 3, 2024. Previously titled “Dust,” Hold Your Breath is rated R for some violence/disturbing images.

The film is set in 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms. A woman, played by Sarah Paulson, is convinced that a sinister presence threatens her family.

Hold Your Breath is set to premiere in the Special Presentations section at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2024. Karrie Crouse and Will Joines directed the film, which Crouse wrote.

The cast includes Sarah Paulson, Amiah Miller, Annaleigh Ashford, Alona Jane Robbins, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear). Alix Madigan and Lucas Joaquin produced the movie.

Steven Spielberg's 2012 drama "Lincoln" may be considered the second part of a thematic trilogy in the filmmaker's oeuvre. Spielberg, from 2005 through 2017, made three notable historical biographies that dealt with specific historical events, but which were clearly being made to comment on dramatic political events in the present.

2005's "Munich" was about the infamous bombing at the 1972 Munich Olympics, wherein Palestinian forces killed 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team. This plan of political vengeance, however, only begets more violence, and solves nothing. Spielberg ended the film with a pensive shot of the World Trade Center towers. "Lincoln," meanwhile, took place at a time in Abraham Lincoln's life when he tried to pass the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery. Written by Tony Kushner, the film was clearly a parallel comment on marriage equality. 2017's "The Post," about the notorious Pentagon Papers, was clearly a post-Trump movie. These three films are Spielberg's best.

“The Holdovers” breakout Dominic Sessa is in talks to portray the celebrity chef and travel documentarian in “Tony,” a film from production company Star Thrower Entertainment. A24 are said to be in talks with “BlackBerry” director and co-writer Matt Johnson to helm the project.

The film’s script is written by Lou Howe and Todd Bartels. A24 is in talks to produce with Trevor White and Tim White under their Star Thrower banner, along with Johnson and Matthew Miller. Emily Rose will executive produce.
