After the last few years of Star Trek tragedies I am so relieved to have the show back to being on track but also modernising enough to keep / grow it's audience.
Discovery tried to grow a new audience, and in doing so went so far it isolated and excluded the traditional fan base. They did this by being so inclusive, they excluded the largest body of fans, men. Strange New Worlds (SNW) has moderated this and is still highly inclusive and gives some great roles to women and other groups traditionally margionalised, but does this without excluding the base fan population. In fact I find that I am really enjoying the personality of some of the women, particularly Erica Ortegas played by Melissa Navia and Christine Chapel, played by Jess Bush.
SNW has also brought us back to more episodic style rather than dragging us down into soap drama in space, which some of the more recent installments had tried. And this is done without following the Picard series attempts to drag the idealistic future into the modern gutter (Picard uttering the F bomb etc just does not fit with what Star Trek is).
So thank you Paramount for giving us a new, modern show that does not throw the past into the bin in an effort to grow the audience. There is enough here to keep old fans like me watching, and also attract new ones.

In the modern era it seems the most the movie watching public want is something with as little thought as possible a cape or a special power, and a lobotomy on the side...
Well finally something that is none of those, There are gaps in this movie that could have been addressed with better continuity tracking, and thought, but generally the movie has some substance, it doesn't hand you the last page (if it were a book) in the first half of the movie, and it draws you along. I think all of the cast did a good job, but upcoming star Brooklynn Prince deserves special mention for her ability. She shows the same maturity in acting while still being a kid in Home Before Dark as well.
Don't let the overall rating for this movie fool you, it has substance, which I suspect is why it got slammed, if you still want a movie that gives more than bam pow and kaboom watch this.
