How can you encourage your team to use failure as a stepping stone to innovation and creativity?

There is the quote from John F. Kennedy "that success has 1,000 fathers and failure is an orphan." As a leader it is important to recognise those that achieve success, however as a leader it is just as important to take responsibility for failure. A good leader sets aside the time to understand the key aspects and actions that resulted in failure, and seeks to actively work with staff to understand why success was not achieved. Remember failure encourages review and reflection, which in many instances can lead to higher order problem solving and innovation, and eventually success.

My first assistant lost valuable files that almost cost us a customer. The options were to fire him (as he told me he expected) or have him learn from it and never repeat the same mistake. I went with option 2 and we addressed the situation and found areas that need to be improved. Step by step he became the most creative person at my creative focused company. The lesson: Never blame the person Address the actions taken Learn from them Improve and grow This creates a culture of loyalty and non-stop fresh ideas, where everyone has a voice and a story to tell.

Leaders must embrace failure as a natural part of progress, learning from it to drive innovation and growth. However, it's crucial to differentiate between productive failures and incompetence. Leaders should promote calculated risk-taking, experimentation, and rapid learning to foster continuous improvement and excellence.

You need to lead by example. It is easy to say that it is safe to fail, or that the team will celebrate failure but showing them will be more powerful. Share examples of where you failed and what you learned from the experience. This will be more impactful on the team than any platitude about the importance of failure.

Start by not being so black and white. Why even view it as “failure”? Everything we engage as individuals and teams is with the goal of meeting objectives or driving things in a forward momentum. If the outcome is different than you planned, evaluate why, celebrate what was learned and keep moving forward. It’s the attachment to the outcome that makes people feel like they “failed”. If you remove that attachment, every day is just an opportunity to be creative and try new things with more meaning.

Big Tech has been one of the biggest advocate of "Fail Fast" but the reality is success is attached to "Learning Fast". The focus on "failure" actually hides a more positive focus which is that of learning. If you couch the work as learning you will find your staff will take bigger more calculated risks that have bigger payoff.

Trying unconventional approaches challenge the traditional fear of failure by turning it into a constructive and even enjoyable experience. By embedding failure as a normal and informative part of the innovation journey, the team can become more comfortable with taking risks and exploring creative solutions.

When you're analyzing and learning from failure, it is important to ask meaningful questions. Ask open-ended questions to understand why decisions were made, how they could have been better, and what factors contributed to failure.

Learning from failure is the blueprint to success. Every mistake is a chapter in the story of growth. For me it is part of the team’s process and as such no one should be afraid of failing. It’s a path to growth.

When failure happens, i would Reach out to trusted colleagues, mentors, or friends for feedback. They can provide valuable insights and different perspectives.and to add that very few people would do that constructively so be clear on who do you choose!

one of the sound bites from the last decade is "fail fast." I would turn that around. When I joined Enterprise Business Services, I pushed the team to move quickly, and do rapid prototyping to get customer feedback. That way we don't spend a lot of resources building the wrong thing. People said "Dave wants Quick Wins." Then one of my team members said, no we want to "Win Quickly." I've now adopted that, and maybe we could say "fail fast or win quickly." It is definitely a win to fail (or have a negative result) quickly, rather than spend 18 months on a project and have it blow up in the cutover, or just fade away.

Identify “good fails” vs. “bad fails”: I have found prioritizing moving fast to be advantageous over spending too much time in planning and preparing, specifically around product execution. Moving fast here enables creativity, adaptability and iteration - and if there is a failure, the time it takes to learn, pivot and keep going still enables you to get products into the market quickly with customer feedback. Moving fast allows for what I call “good fails” vs. the cost of getting stuck in too much planning/prep (or “bad fails”) gives no feedback.

One of my most significant failures was rejecting a high-level management job offer from a multimillion-dollar travel organization. I just heard someone say "Failure teaches you more than success" and it is so true. When I was at Microsoft, one of the things I loved the most was the culture of Growth mindset (book by Carol Dweck). This approach encouraged people to fast fail - try something, learn something and then improve the process, product or approach. As a leader, I try to show my vulnerability and talk about failures I have had throughout my career (a few of them epic!) and it provides the psychological safety everyone needs to be okay with failing. I have found that creating this environment inspires innovation, connection and more engagement.

I don't agree with the popular opinion that "failures don't exist." The reality is that failures do exist, and sometimes they can significantly harm a company or business. However, even in such situations, there are many ways to continue developing your company and harness the negative impact of failure for your company's benefit. This involves learning important lessons about our decisions, business vision, and the actions that led to that failure. With this constructive mindset, we can consistently grow and make progress.

It's important to understand that not everything that doesn't work is a 'failure' - if you're doing research into an area, or building prototypes, then you are experimenting, and a well thought through experiment is not a failure even if what you learn is 'never do this again'!

Its very important as leaders to ensure having safe psychological environment where people have freedom to raise thier voice. This is the only way where organisations can develop!

I tell my teams “Good news travels fast. Bad news needs to travel faster.” Creating a culture of fear of retribution results in an inability to quickly respond to the challenge. If the team feels like they can inform their management without being chastised, the organization is more likely to find a solution quicker. Of course, the team closest to the problem should come with some ideas to solve it. However, often coaching from others who are not so close to it can suggest an objective point of view.

Any discussion about failure must happen in the environment of psychological safety. I recently had a conversation with my team member about a failure where she was involved. I could sense her discomfort when she entered my office. I did a few simple things, which led to a conversation vs confrontation: - I asked her to sit down (and sat next to her vs opposite her) - I asked her to give me her perspective on what happened (before providing mine) - I spoke about our failure vs her mistake (note: it may have been her mistake but the language is important to get the conversation flowing vs stuck due to search for excuses) - I asked her to tell me what she would do if she were me She left the room owning the solution vs carrying the blame!

One of the key to give appreciation and recognition is knowing your subordinate preferred languages of appreciation. By giving appreciation and recognition in the right time, leader can keep subordinates feel motivated and it will encourage them to perform better in the future. Leaders must build trust and provide safety nets to subordinates, so that this 'failure' won't affect top management's judgment towards team.

One way is to emphasize that failure by defintion refers missing a desired outcome out of a set plan. Yet, there is an outcome that was neither desired or expected which shouldn't be overlooked but rather studied, explored or exploited to know exactly how it could be reproduced to avoid its reproduction. Therefore, the team effort wasn't completely in vain but rather it succuessfully added to the knowledge base that would suppot future success by getting the desired outcome. It is a learning journey.

Failure is part of growth and teaches us valuable lessons. Giving the team room to make mistakes and learning from them will help them grow and be more confident. What’s important is learning from the mistakes. Lessons learned from failures are more powerful than lessons learned through the normal course of life.

Failure is a funny word. It can have multiple triggers. Sometimes it's helpful to mine the failed initiatives for the elements that were successful. Maybe there were 5 activities undertaken and 2 of them were excellent and successful, but the overall result was still a failure. This is the principle of not throwing out the baby with the bathwater. It also encourages teams to find the nuggets of positivity that were hidden in the failure. On the next iteration or project or endeavor the plan is to keep the successful activities and tweak and change the negative ones.

Incorporate - Encourage failure in Reviews: Evaluate team members based on their willingness to take risks and learn from failure rather than solely focusing on successes. Have worked with a CEO who had this habit of encouraging risk takers by giving complete freedom only with a condition of not repeating 😊 in turn entire organization gets valuable learning. This can help shift the mindset from fear of failure, risk averse to a growth-oriented perspective.
