I am a visual learner and work well with visual maps only if I create them myself or I am actively involved. I associate each part to a process and if it has been created by others it rarely tells me something I can remember. If I am part of a group and we write it down together I feel it mine and it does help me, tough.

As a teacher I believe it is important to offer different learning tools to my students and I always try to cater for the different learning styles. The problem is when you are in your first years as a student, you are still exploring yourself and need to understand what type of learner you are, what works better for you. Therefore I strongly believe it is important that children practise different learning styles before they decide what they prefer to stick to. They need to experience a variety of ways to memorise and learn to express themselves to others. The written form cannot be used only for them to understand it. If they present it to an audience, it must be understandable or it means lack of communication.

Mind maps need to be alternated to other forms of writing that includes sentences properly formed or these children will end up communicate with the world in brief sentences without extending their thoughts nor vocabulary. Mind maps are ONE tool, not THE tool!
