I had the privilege this week of speaking at the #FocusOnTheFuture WeProtect Global Alliance Summit 2024 in Abu Dhabi. Thank you to Iain Drennan, Dana Humaid Al Marzooqi, the WeProtect Board (and its founder Joanna Shields) as well as the Ministry of Interior UAE for ensuring that the topic of online child safety is featured so prominently on the international agenda. It was truly inspiring sharing the stage with remarkable partners Denton Howard, CDir from INHOPE, Sean Litton from Tech Coalition, Chelsea Carlson from OpenAI and Fallon McNulty from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children committed to making the internet safer for children and ending online child sexual exploitation. Our panel explored how to best tackle the alarming rise of GenAI CSAM, a topic we recently examined in Bracket Foundation’s third flagship report. Indeed Generative AI is increasing the risks to children online, especially through capabilities that allow for the production of AI-generated CSAM; this new variable is deepening the crisis for law enforcement agencies that are already crippled under insurmountable amount of “traditional” CSAM reports. Solutions do exist but a multi-stakeholder approach between tech platforms, AI industry experts, governments, regulators, legislators and civil society is needed now more than ever to avoid unleashing new unabated harms on the internet at the expense of the most vulnerable in society, our children.
