ERP Founding Members: Klaus Hieronymi, Global Compliance Expert The collection and recycling targets are dictated by the European Directive and are part of the management entities' drivers. This gives rise to various operations, including information and awareness-raising initiatives to mobilise the population to dispose of waste selectively. Twenty years on, this mission is still on the agenda as one of the major trends in the future of the e-waste sector. According to Klaus, one of the four founding members of ERP, “the collection rate in Europe is very low” and “the major reason for not achieving those goals is incomplete statistics. Not all of the e-waste streams ending up in proper recycling are recorded and reported.” The other mission is to include “reuse as an element of discussion” considering its business opportunities. Klaus Hieronimy also pointed out that ERP and Landbell have always shared the same “passion for competition as well as cross-border operations,” and there are essential factors for a successful marriage! A message from ERP Founding Members: HP ERP faced several challenges during its initial years, namely the evolving regulatory landscape, and the logistical complexities of creating a unified recycling framework across multiple countries. Ramon Teixido, currently the Global Take Back Compliance Manager at HP Inc, was one of the key personalities involved in the ERP creation process back in the early 2000s and highlighted that “It was that intention to make a pan-European solution and really to help everybody to meet the new regulation” and for HP “the main interest on ERP was having a single solution for all EU countries”. "Working with ERP was a simplification of the process", allowing one single interface to cover multiple countries, multiple types of obligations on WEEE, packaging and batteries and confidence and open communication were identified by Ramon Teixido as two relevant aspects of this long-term relationship. ERP Founding Members: Electrolux In 2004, as the European Union’s regulatory landscape surrounding EPR and WEEE was evolving, Electrolux took a proactive approach to environmental responsibility by partnering with the European Recycling Platform. As Viktor Sundberg, VP of Environmental and EU Affairs - Electrolux Major Appliances, said, "We were interested in the WEEE Directive and to see where it was going and how they could influence it." The partnership with ERP was a key example of how large multinational companies could collaborate within industry frameworks to manage environmental impact, ensuring that waste was minimised and valuable materials were recovered and reused. Viktor Sundberg highlighted that "ERP had the most competitive offer" and "became the recycling system used in many countries." It was possible to share the cost of waste management, making compliance more cost-effective than managing it independently in each market. Today is dedicated to Sony and will feature the contribution of two personalities who were essential in the idea creation from the first moment and bravely accepted the challenge of building together a competitive European solution for waste recycling. We invite you to meet Kieren Mayers, nowadays the Vice President, Environment, Social, and Governance – Sony Interactive Entertainment, and learn about early times challenges back to 2002, achievements through the years and his vision of the future. This is how the great story started: “We have a new idea for you! Do you think Sony might be interested? (…) This was a radical idea, and we should ensure a competitive operation in every country and organise this as a procurement platform.” Check out the whole story in Kieren Mayers's words, and stay tuned for the next post later today!
